It's not pollution that wiped em out, it's the transformation of critical habitat into concrete with no vegetation to shade the banks and cool the water. In addition to this, the majority of the lower sgr is blocked.

Steelhead and salmon can be found in surprising abundance near the mouth of the sgr, as it's an excellent place to forage.

In fact, steelhead are sometimes caught in Newport harbor and Dana point harbor.
