Default Newport Harbor 9/17/07 kayak report

Here goes my first saltwater report
My friend and I decided to visited to salts on our kayaks since we been getting the skunk at freshwater. So we went to Newport Harbor to try our luck. We launch at the corner of E Balboa BLVD and Channel Road about 8am.

We start going outside the harbor, no luck expect this small halibut, My friends started getting sick so we headed back inside,

Fish around and got nothing, then we saw some guys fishing on kayak and ask for tips, they give us some great tip. Headed over to where they recommend and fish here. Got lots of different kinds of fish.

It was great catching fish again
I didn’t know to size limit on these so I release all fish, I know the bass where 12 inch.

Can somebody ID one of the fish 7th photo down

Well I had a great time fishing!

Halibut small looks like 10 to 12 inches

Fishing spot. Check out Lun, he was asleep for about half an hour

    Calico Bass

    Sand Bass

    Buttermouth Perch

Yea that looks like a sanddab...

Last fish looks like a whitefish! They don't have those around NPH do they!? Otherwise, I dunno what it would be.

The last fish, judging by the eyes, maybe a senorita?

Actually, bullet's is right! It is a senorita! Man, I knew I saw that look *somewhere* (maybe that's why they call em "senoritas" - ;) haha). It's hard to tell since it's partially submerged, but yup, that's what it is - orangish eyes.

This if the first time fishing in the bays, for a small fish they fought very well! And a mean set of teeth!

The last fish is most likely a rock wrasse...rock wrasse tend to be larger than senorita...to be sure which one you caught check the tail...if it is a senorita then it will have a black spot on its tail...the rock wrasse do not have the spot there..although some rock wrasse do have a horizontal black stripe. There is no size limit...however they are kinda like the carp of the bay...lol.

That's a Sandab. you can tell this because its still see-thru. A halibut about that size would not be see-thru

I just took another look at the pic and it does have the vertical black stripe so it is a rock wrasse you caught...there are lots of those in the bay...i've caught many using shrimp.
