Barracuda biting: Great news for local anglers was word that the first significant bite of barracuda began Wednesday off Seal Beach. The Enterprise and city of Long Beach had more than 70 barracuda as the toothy critters were biting lures and bait.

"Many of our fish were in the 7- to 10-pound class," the city of Long Beach's Bobby Rubino reported.

On Thursday, Enterprise captain Andy Siratt reported big schools of marauding barracuda about four miles off Seal Beach.

Barracuda also are fond of snacking at night. The Enterprise has twilight trips departing at 6:30 p.m. and returning at midnight. Long Beach Marina Sportfishing is the closest landing to the fishing grounds and captain Frank Savino has fished these waters for decades.

Seabass bite: The white seabass bite was fantastic for the Freedom over Memorial Day weekend out of 22nd Street Landing at Catalina Island. They had more than 90 of the croaker for a two-day trip. The bite has since slowed.

But white seabass can be here one day and gone the next. The weather for this weekend looks good, so this could rebound.
