Default Rpt-Sat-02-16-13 Calico Bass on the chew!

Fishing Sat. 2-16-13, with John on his spiffy 25’Parker, the “Horndog”. We launched out of Cabrillo’s in San Pedro at 6:00 am, our beginning destination being the Palos Verdes Coast. It took us less than 20 minutes to reach the structure spot where we would be targeting Bass. The ocean was grease calm and the view was crystal clear! Felt like you could reach out and touch Catalina.

Always special when you start your day off with a spectacular Sunrise:

We coasted up to the area we wanted to fish. The meter lit up with some very fishy marks along a Ľ mile area. Reaching the end of the structure, John pulled back on the throttles and we both tossed out our plastics with high expectations. Water Temperatures were only 54.1 degrees, which could have a negative impact on the feeding fish?.

Our drift was at a rapid speed of about 10 inches per minute! The good news was there was some current, and that’s what the fish want, and they did go on the chew! I don’t remember who got bit first, yet we both caught fish within minutes of each other and the bite was consistent throughout our first set, which probably traveled a whole 300 yards in perhaps 20 minutes. It was a Calico Bass kind of day, and the fish ranged between 1.5 and 3 pounds.

Here is John with his first decent size Calico:

    I caught his twin sister:

John set us back up on a similar drift; guess what, it went a different direction? Not to worry, the Calico Bass were hungry.

    Some more pictures:

We metered bait all around us, with porpoise and birds keeping us company. The critter fishing was also in full gear as we both caught Gopher Cod, Copper Rockfish, Reds, Lingcod and Sculpin.

John with a nice Sand Bass:

    Me too:

    John with another Calico Bass:

    Well not to be denied:

Amazingly we caught 30 Calico Bass before I caught our first Sand Bass:

And shortly thereafter I caught another:

The weather throughout the day was sensational. We fished a variety of areas, and most yielded fish. We released almost all of our fish, keeping only one Sand Bass and one Sculpin. We caught 6 Sand Bass, 34 Calico Bass, 2 Reds, 12 Gopher Cod, 4 Sculpin, 4 Copper Rockfish, and 2 Lingcod. This was one heck of a local fishing trip, and over a 60 fish day.

We called it a day at 2:00pm. Thanks so much for the invite John, can’t wait for our next adventure together.

    Hook up! Cory
