I finally got a little time to go fishin this mornin, so I decided Id try and fish the surf for my 3rd time. The first couple of outings were very uneventful to say the least. Anyway. Headed to the beach, and got there at first light. Donned the waders and made my way to the water. The area of beach I fished really doesnt have much structure in the way of troughs, kelp, or hard bottom. Mostly just alot of turbulence and eddies caused by the surf itself.
My rig consists of a 8'6" Shimano Convergance, paired with a Shimano Sahara 2500FD, spooled with 6lb Izor XXX Smoke. The first setup I tried out was a carolina rig, with a 3/8oz egg sinker and fluorescent orange bead, 6lb Trilene 100% Fluoro leader tied to a #6 Owner Mosquito Hook. I started out using a Bass Pro Shops 2" Triple Ripple Grub in a fluorescent orange/silver sparkle color, enhanced with some Pro Cure Calico Cocktail.
I began to fan cast around, and I started gettin bit!!! I caught 7 fish, between 9-10 inches on the grub. After about 2 hours, the bite sorta shut down. I kept getting hit, but they wouldnt take the whole grub. Thats when I decided to tie on a Yo Zuri 2 3/4" Pins Minnow. I caught the bigger fish of the day on that little lure. The biggest one I caught measured to just under 13", and gave a nice little tussle. There was no way those fish were comin loose. They would just hammer it!!! The total count for today was 13 fish total, all Barred Surf Perch. I left em biting due to errands I had to run, but all in all, it turned out to be a pretty productive outing!
I wanted to thank all the guys and gals who contribute regularly to this forum, because if it wasnt for the info and insight into the world of surf fishing shared by you, I wouldnt have tried this style of fishing for the first time, then gotten skunked. Then I wouldnt have tried the second time, and gotten skunked. And if it wasnt for reading and re reading the threads in this forum, instead of giving up after the second time and just sitting at home, I wouldnt have went today!!! Thank you guys, very much!!!
