Thread: stripes and smallies

    Default stripes and smallies

Decided to head back to Pyramid today to see if I could get into the smallies again. Bluebird skies and no wind for the morning made it a little tough to get them to go, but eventually they did.

By afternoon, I had my fill of the little bronze ones. Went on the hunt for the striped ones. Found them in a very windy spot, which made fly casting an adventure. But I managed to pick up a few nice 3lb models, two of which came home for dinner tonight.

Fun day, topped off with fresh striper tacos and home-made guacamole.

Yessir. A roll cast is really all that is needed. With a shooting head line like I use, you don't do a lot of false casting. Especially when it's windy. It's basically a "chuck and duck" routine to get the fly out there. Stripers and smallies are a blast on a 6 wt.

Yes, I have not had the good fortune of coming across any boils this year at Pyramid, so everything I've been getting is on sub-surface/streamer-type flies. I fish sinking lines pretty much exclusively, even when there is topwater action.

Here's some samples of the flies I use that have been effective:

Thanks for the pics they are very very close to what I have tied and not used yet. I'm gonna have to get um wet, I have a new 7wt rod that I haven't used yet and should be just the ticket for Striper huntin'..

Here is a little history on using the white fly on Stripers from Bob Slamal. Bob is a high school classmate of my wife and he and his late father were customers of mine when I owned a sporting goods manufacturing business in the late 1960's.

Mom's store is still in business but has gone through a number of owners the last 10+ years.
