    Default Veterans Day Salute

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the past and present military members who have served this nation so well, whether it be old-timers like me or the present crop of warriors. A special thanks to those who are now serving. The last ten years have demanded extraordinary sacrifices, and I want you to know you have my deepest admiration and appreciation for a job well done.

Thanks. When I decided to include it, I knew there would still be some around who recognized it. For the uninitiated, it is the ribbon bar for the Vietnam Service Medal. It became the rallying symbol for our generation of warriors. We were not welcomed back with open arms like today's veterans, but we still had each other. The callous decisions by our national leadership, the divisions at home about the war, the exposure of underlying racial issues, the question of whether the elite had to serve, the role of the media, and growing distrust of the government all served to create a hostile environment for the person in uniform. At one point we were under orders to never wear our uniform off base because of the negative treatment we received from the public(as if with our military haircuts, we didn't stand out in 1960's society anyway). I read an article recently that pointed out that many of the issues we confront today are legacies from Vietnam: how to successfully recruit and manage an all-volunteer force, wage counterinsurgency versus conventional warfare, mitigate collateral damage and civilian casualties, and the military’s relationship with the rest of American society.

5:22 PM, just went out front of my home and took down our colors. Jig-Guy a USS Midway CVA 41 sailor glad I was able to serve 59/63. Fishbreath you are correct this last 10 years for our military folks has been a real rough deal for them.
