Rpt-Sun-Mon-10-28-12 Salsapuedes Shallow water Rockfish go off!
Fishing Sunday, for a half day trip, and all day Monday 10-28-12, with Bill Fisher, on his 18’ Trophy, “Toad Hall”. I left my home in Diamond Bar at 9:50am; arriving at Bill’s Trailer residence on a cliff overlooking the water, some 10 miles south of Rosarito at noon. Bill was scheduled to arrive at 1pm and my trip down went smoothly, so I went to have lunch at Charley’s nearby. Enjoyed a glass of Chardonnay, some great chips with Salsa and other dip mixtures, and a fish and shrimp taco, yum yum!
Bill got stopped in secondary in his van, and finally arrived by 1:15pm. I loaded my gear in his van and off we went to Las Salinas. The weather was beyond incredible. So grease calm it was like a dream vacation. We launched out of his slip at 1:45pm and started fishing at 2:15 pm. We checked out a few shallow water areas for a couple of those extinct Bocaccio, Starries, Johnny Bass, Calico Bass, Whitefish and some short Lingcod. We moved out to some deeper spots and loaded up on more Bocaccio and some decent sized Santa Marias, Starries and Copper Rockfish. Caught only two medium sized Reds today. Called it a day at 5:30 pm with about 30 fish caught and kept about 15.
Back at the Trailer we enjoyed a few bruskies while we watched Sunday night football and the World Series. Charley’s delivers and we ordered out for dinner. I had a great Carne Asada Burrito, while Bill had a Chicken and Shrimp taco. New Orleans gets blown out in football and the Giants win the World Series, a Dodger nightmare? Lights out and up at 5:45 am.
Just past grey light we arrived in Las Salinas, where Bill slips his boat. We exited the harbor around 6:45am, into very calm seas, with some small swells. We headed south, stopping in the shallows at first for very little, then moving out to deeper water. Again the deeper water fishing was slow at best, some very big Bocaccio hit the decks. Here I am with a 6 pounder, the biggest of the day:
We moved from spot to spot catching only Salmon Grouper and Starries. Bill then ran down to Salsapuedes and we began a drift in shallow water. The fishing on plastics was absolutely insane? The next three hours we caught fish on almost every cast. We both caught limits of Reds, released a baker’s dozen, caught more than a dozen Calico Bass from 2 to 4 lbs. all released. We caught 40 to 50 Bocaccio, kept a limit of the bigger boys and released the rest. We also caught Chocolate Rockfish, more Lingcod, some nearly legal, and we both lost a couple of legal Lingcod at gaff. Some pictures:

What was absolutely a surprise was both of us hooking up with Thresher Sharks. I hooked mine on 20 lb. test line on a plastic and after a short 5 minute fight got broke off. Bill hooked his on a Mega Bait Lure with heavier line and still got ripped.

Left Bill’s for the long journey home to Diamond Bar at 5:20 pm. Otay Mesa was said to be a 15 minute wait at the border. Took me 19 minutes and the traffic home was kind. I pulled into my driveway at 8:30 pm. Yikes, I was very tired and happy to be home after a fantastic couple of days of fishing.
Bill, we had another fantastic 1.5 days of fishing, too cool. I had a great time, thanks so much for the invite, and fabulous hospitality. What a fun time on the big pond!
