You touch on some "truths" and some false perceptions. Let's start with Social Security and Medicare. Social Security is solvent for awhile yet even as is. Medicare, not so much. The fix is to raise the cutoff of FICA contributions from the current level of $113,700 to say $250,000. This means that we ask the same of all earned dollars up to $250,000 that most people never see. Put another way, the vast majority of taxpayers pay FICA on every dollar they ever earn. When the small percentage of higher income people exceed $113,700, they stop paying what everyone else pays. Having them pay what everyone else pays up to $250,000 would make Social Security and Medicare solvent indefinitely. The dirty little secret that makes Medicare appear insolvent involves "welfare" for large wealthy corporations. We are the only industrialized country to disallow negotiating prices for drugs and medical procedures. We, in effect subsidize vastly cheaper prices for all the countries that do negotiate better prices. The drug companies are some of the most profitable businesses ever seen in history. It isn't exactly the same for medical procedures. However, the same idea applies. We are giving them excess profits, otherwise known as welfare.
The issue of military spending is a little different. Until recently, we spent more than the combined spending of all other countries in the world. Even now we spend more than the next highest 13 countries combined. This when even the military says we are buying systems they don't need or want. We are also in the midst of an unprecedented privatizing of services the military has always done in house at far less cost with much more over site and effectiveness. We should be spending more to help soldiers damaged by their service. We should also provide them with education to reintegrate them back into society. We did this following WWII with great results. Simply stopping the expense of privatizing services would save vast sums of money. We need to rethink how wars will be fought in the future and prepare for them instead of trying to perfect the military to fight the last war.
The forgoing would have many benefits as these three expenditures are among the leading drivers of deficit spending and debt we have seen much discussed on this forum across many threads.
