Tradition Yellowtail and Calicos 8/4/12
The barracuda had pulled a Houdini on us, and the kelp wasn’t looking very good, so to start we would be codding, but not before making a sweep of the coast to see if the barracuda wanted to pop back up. They were nowhere to be found, so we headed out to the cod grounds.
The codding was fair, with some reds and chuckleheads wanting to bite the jig as an added bonus to the voracious salmon grouper. We fished out on the grounds for a few hours and then made a run for the kelp line. The fishing was slow until the sun popped out, and the calicos started to bite a little bit. Angler Kelvin caught a nice big calico bass, and it was tanked for jackpot.
Then Morgon hooked into a big fish while fishing light line. He managed to get it away from the kelp and quickly brought it to gaff. This is the Tradition’s second yellowtail of the year. Not a rat and not a huge fish, but catchable along the kelp. Any bigger and that fish wouldn’t have seen the gaff, fishing that light of line.
And then on Sunday, the barracuda popped back up along with some sand bass in the count. I sound like a broken record when I say that I hope the bite sticks with us, as it hasn’t really anytime throughout the summer. But with some good weather maybe that will be the case this time. All I know is that it’s great to see some surface action, and now is the time to go fishing!
