BBL 7-21-2012 - Wanted: Big Bear Bass

Hey All,

Not much to report. Worked for trout on the fly this past weekend at the west end. Picked up one on the powerbait under a bobber - DEEEEEEEP - 35' to 40' down. Had two really strong trout hits on the fly early Sunday and thought it would be on, but nothing the rest of the morning.

The only thing I could pick-up were a dozen or so crappie (all on the fly) - some nice, big ones, but not what I was looking for.

Ran into jmytuna on his new pontoon boat w/ fam/friends - they picked up a stocker trout under a bobber and then moved on after a couple hours.

Prior Saturday saw some really nice trout action just off Windy Point by some shore fishers and some anchored boaters who know the hot spots. Floating PB up from the bottom and waiting - but it was paying off for them.

Next time I'm out I'll probably try hunting bass again. Not sure where's best to search and would enjoy some suggestions - post or PM. Summer's heating up but the fish seem to be cooling down.

jmytuna suggested working docks and I may see how that goes. Lots to choose from so not sure where I'll focus since I'll be in the tube and can't cover too much area easily.

Maybe I'll try shooting fish in a barrel at Jenks just to remind myself what a head-shake feels like

I'm sure Ettagart will chime in but the Observatory and Grout Bay are good places to catch crappie and I've had success most years by Garstin Island but this year I haven't gotten into them there like past years. I get mine on fly's of many different variations and usually release them to get bigger.

Picked up a few more trouters drifting slip bobbers with powerworm at mouth of metcalf, papoose. Caught more fish at the dock while cleaning the boat..ha ha.
3 bass on minijigs, 2 on plastics in half an hour. GEEZ.
Also saw 3 huge carp caught on the dock with some seacret dough bait in 45 min. Gotta learn how to fish carp.

@fishermanx14 - I pick up crappie just about anywhere I'm at when I'm fly fishing with a wooly bugger - just about any color and just about any depth - although they like the warmer waters and structure. Garstin Island had a SWARM of crappie 2 years ago that lived there for months - gone the past two years. Guaranteed crappie on the fly at/under the dock at the very tip of windy point. You can keep yourself busy all day there thinking you're a great fisherman!!!! Crappie jigs also work great. The main technique seems to be slow and steady movement of the fly/lure and they have a very light bite. Don't horse it or you'll rip their lips right off.

@jmytuna - Nice to hear the drift worked and y'all didn't get skunked. Funny w/ the bass - If you get a chance, post/pm which doc areas ;)
