Tradition More Epic Barracuda Action 7/20/12

The barracuda that had busted wide open last Saturday night had, unfortunately, only been a brief occurrence, with boats jumping on the action the next morning, but nothing doing that afternoon. So we were back to square one. On Thursday the Tradition found a little lingcod action as bass fishing has been on the slower side. On Friday, however, we would dedicate the day’s fishing to bass.

We were greeted to flat calm seas first thing in the morning as we looked for barracuda en route to some rockpiles for the bass. No gar found so we headed straight for the spots. The first fish of the day was a nice 12 pound halibut caught by Emillio Rebollar. That’s another thing about fishing the SMB Stones with some good squid – you can catch some nice halibut beside them, on anchor, fishing leadhead and squid. Throughout the day we had a little pick on the bass, albeit being slow overall. As a plus it was half calicos, some of which were hitting our baits on the sink, even on an ounce-and-a-half leadhead. There were also some cinnamons (brown rockfish) and a nice sheephead to top things off.







The twilight trip yielded a reappearance of the barracuda which turned into another round of wide open action. They were eating everything you threw at them – any type of plastic, jig, etc. – the gar were voraciously attacking anything that hit the water. If you missed a bite, you more often than not got bit again on the same retrieve. While most anglers were fishing with surface irons, anglers Josh Marcellus and Emillio Rebollar were fishing leadheads and scampis – plastics typically reserved for sand bass fishing. But they were working every single cast, and I believe Emillio went through two packs of them by the time the action had subsided. After dark, we finished up the night’s fishing over a rockpile for some bass, where we ended up with about a dozen bass for our efforts, including some decent, cookie-cutter sized calicos (most of which were caught on the drop shot with Gulp).













The Tradition also got into the barracuda really well on the Saturday 3/4 day trip, Saturday night twilight trip, and Sunday’s ¾ day trip, catching seven-around to limits on each trip. The barracuda are really chewing again giving us some great surface action as bass fishing starts to get better. Get on the Tradition soon to get on the action! Great times, great fishing!
