3 long words, Green, Right, Starboard.
3 short words, Red, Left, Port.
The whistle or horn is law. Put a plastic whistle on each PFD.
Remember the Titanic movie, the whistle saved her.

I think 3, flares or a flare gun over 16'
Air horn not needed on a 10' boat.

    The whistle's at West Marine $2 - $3 are 3" x 1" x 1/4" flat.
They come with a strong string lanyard.
Not with a ball referee type.

    Sound device is required.

You can buy a $10 air horn.
The air horn is not required just a sound device.

Air horns are big, they rust, can leak, they run out of air.
When the sheet hits the fan you grab your PFD and jump as your boat sinks.

Example; Your going to Catalina at night, you hit a log or telephone pole.
(I've seen them). Your boat is sinking fast, you need to radio SOS.
You have a 12" hole going down fast and 90 seconds to do all this.
Where the F in air horn. You grab your PFD and jump.
Put a $2.50 whistle on each PFD.

Going offshore you should have a ditch bag, wetsuit.

Your in SD, If you go 20 min South of Pt Loma into Mexican waters and have a Flare Gun OMG.
Flare Guns are illegal in Mexico, considered a firearm. You can be arrested and towed to Ensenada.
Just carry flares, they expire but are still good, put them in your car for a emergency.
    Expired flares are a ticket.
