Default BBL 5-27-2011 - Roger Dodger!

Father-in-Law Jim and I hit the lake at 7:15am at the East Launch, zipped west a bit and started trolling just past Juniper Point. Jim got a strike within a few minutes, then I got a strike, then him again but these first ones weren't getting hooked.

Finally Jim landed his first of 13, that's right THIRTEEN before 1pm. A few pix are below - almost all were in the small stocker size no more than 1.5lbs wet. Didn't keep any, he had five in the fridge from the day before.

At one point, Jim caught one, tossed it back and immediately got hit on his second pole. Tossed that one back and when putting the first line back out, got hit immediately once he moved to put it in the rod holder. That happened one other time when he got a second hook-up on the same pole immediately after putting the line back out.

I finally landed my first one around 8:30 - four total for me, should have been five, but one spit the lure just as I was bringing him into the boat.

At one point we had a double-hook-up - always fun, I had to steer the boat with my butt (really windy and getting blown all over heading into the wind).

For Jim, almost all of his were caught on a gold Kastmaster on regular line, but running behind a Shasta Tackle Dodger - the one pictured below - silver with an orange lightning bolt. That bad-boy was killing - gave great movement to the lures. That's why I took an old funky saltwater spoon-type-needlefish lure and made a mini-dodger.

All but one of mine were caught on a gold Kastmaster on leadcore at 3 or 4 colors behind the jerry-rigged dodger. One was caught on a tiger-stripe needlefish behind a string of standard trout flashers.

Beautiful day - water was 58 degrees air was in the 60's - Sunny. We only trolled north side from Big Bear Shores Marina to the Observatory. All were released healthy today. Not too many people out on the lake today - just wait until tomorrow!!!

See some pix below - not the best trout porn, but you get the idea. The pic of the trout in my hand was one of mine and the biggest of the day - again, not the biggest fish in the lake, but they're still fish.

We saw MANY trout cruising near the surface when the wind wasn't blowing. Some really big ones, too. I couldn't tell how deep Jim's dodger rig was running, but I *think* most of my catches were on the shallower side.

I picked up a Luhr-Jenson dodger this afternoon and can't wait to try it. We should be going out a couple more times this weekend, we'll see how busy the lake gets.

    Cheers,

    Eric

LOTS of family came up to visit Friday for the whole weekend, so can't get out on Saturday :( Should be able to sneak-away on Sunday and hopefully Monday!!!!!! May hit it in the float tube on Monday, we'll see. Beautiful conditions, warm, but just a tad breezy.

Dodgers work pretty good up there , and try the 3 bladed seps flashers with a nite crawler at 3-4 colors now in front of the west launch ramp [ near the white bouy ] . Great post Eric , nothing like a good bite [ I hate the wind , lol ] // db

Great report. My oldest son was up there Saturday and it seems that the fish are on the move. A month ago we were killing them on the North Shore east of the west ramp and now not so good. Have they moved towards the cut off or the dam? June 11 we will be up there for their tournament and will work the triangle.
