Shimano 300 EJ issue

Going to purchase a 300ej and heard good and bad things about it. One of the main problems that people were telling me is that it is not a good reel for casting as the big handle will swing forward when casting and lock the reel while line is going out and center piece is rotating at full speed. This would eventually lead to quicker wear of gears inside or even breaking it on the spot. Any experience with the reel or comments are greatly appreciated before I make the decision of purchasing it.

I've never heard of this and don't believe there is any truth to it. What your saying is it that the handle will cuase the clutch to engage during a cast. The counter balanced handle eliminates this issue. That being said, you wont' have gears wearing out any quicker or experience problems with casting.

The 300EJ was designed to fish the wax wings which is a surface lure. So, it's a casing reel in every way. You're getting some bad info.

Why not just get a 300E and put a calcutta or torium handle on it? Sure the whole thing will be $10 more than the EJ, but it's more dependable. I've used the 300E a few times and it's a pretty narly all around reel; Calicos in deep kelp, WSB at the Cat, shallow water rockfish, etc.

JDM "Jigging" versions of reel lack the centrifugal brakes because they're meant to be fished straight up and down, hence 'jigging,' kinda like the "Bay Game."

Does the 300EJ contain the brakes?

The only two differences between the 300 E and EJ are the handle and the gear ratio.
300E has a 6.2:1 ratio and the EJ has 6.9:1 ratio. They are the same reel other than that.

300E and 300EJ are basically the same reel with different handle and gear ratio options. The only real value to buying a 300E and putting an Calcutta handle is the ability to switch out handles for different uses. I like the stock Curado handle for most fishing, but use the power handle in the salt where I really might benefit from the added leverage. The only issue a power handle will bring up is balance. The added counterbalance weighting and mass of the handle itself could mean the Curado 300EJ might be uncomfortable to huck all day if you are matching it up with an ligther freshwater SB rod.
