Understanding Seasonal bait migration patterns

Here is what biologist Qwin said in one of my posts. A chance your deeper sounder marks are Pond Smelt....since lots of guys on here have stated the shad at DVL are few and far between these days.


The baitfish was either Inland Silverside or Japanese Pond Smelt. Silversides are up shallow and the Pond Smelt are deeper.

I snagged one of those in Lake Silverwood 20 years ago while trolling for stripers. It weighed about 2-3 lbs, and tasted pretty good if memory serves me.

Very tasty, but very bony. They put up a good fight!
