Default SARL 3-28-11...10th skunk in a row...Must read for SMOKERS!

So We went to SARL again yesterday morning. Every1 was slaying them except my friend and I...I have been fishing 10 times in 2011 and only caught 1 fish so far. We have been using every single thing a tackle store can offer from bait, to jigs, to lures in every single combination. Every one around us almost limiting in just a couple of hours, but not us.

Heres the trick. I always knew smoking effected the fish from trying to eat your bait. I would always use some sort of scent like garlic or what ever to mask the smell. Didn't know it had such a huge factor on these stalker trout. Ive always smoked and caught fish in the ocean or in streams and "wilder" lakes. But these stalker trout are super tricky. Found out that even though u mask the smell of nicotine externally, it still doesnt do the trick.

HereS how to do it better guys and I am an idiot for not knowing this until today. Instead of masking the smell on your bait. You should mask the smell on your hands and fingers. What you should do is get your dip bait or spray bait and work it into your hands aggressivly. Yes, your hands might smell like gravy or garlic but it will GARANTEE you fish.

The best bet is to not smoke at all during fishing but who can resist lighting a cigarette in that beautiful scenery right by the water and fresh air? I can't. There are a few tricks like wearing a glove while smoking, or using some sort of plactis cigarette holder, but the best is to not smoke. I found this out the hard way!

    I'm ready for next time!

    Happy Hunting every one!

Im not to sure about this "smoking" theory. I dont smoke myself BUT two of my buddies i fish with all the time smoke. And i mean they will catch a few fish light one and catch another fish right after they are done. I do know people that put scent one there hands...thats kind of far out IMO. It also might be diffrent when it comes to bait fishing, the 2 guys i know are Jig fisherman, there is more hand contact with the bait i guess. Idk though you could be right...it would be cool if there was some way we could test this huh? lol

if you are using heavy line for stocked trout. Lose it. I see this all the time...people using 50ft surf poles with 30 pound test with a huge treble and a golf ball sized glob of power bait and wonder why in the hell they arent getting bit....If you are not doing this..my apologies....

The day I have to lather my hands with garlic-oil is the day I stop fishing. 10 skunks in a row is not cool and at the rate that these pay-to-play lakes charge...you'll fall in a hole with no fish to show for it. Save that 20 bucks here and there and make a trip to some real trout waters...the sierras. Plenty of options to work with right now. Better views, better/cleaner people up there, surrounded by actual fisherman, you don't feel like you're at a casino, and most of all...better fishing!

I think there is some truth about scent on your hands and not catching fish. I know that if you use suntan lotion or insect repellant and it is on your hand you will catch less fish if you do not wash it off with soap. So I think that anything other than fish bait on you hand will reduce your catch. I know for a fact that it will happen on a plastic bass worm.

Smoking or not smoking has NOTHING to do with what your problem is. 10 skunks in a row=YOU'RE DOING SOMETHING WRONG.

In your last thread about skunks, we all asked specific questions about what you were doing to help you out. You refused to answer our questions, only saying "I tried everything." no, you haven't tried everything, because you aren't catching fish.

We can't help you if you refuse to answer our questions. We want to help, but you are making it very difficult.

    aww man that sucks.

i would have to say the smoking thing is FALSE i have caught many trout (while smoking) and when i cut them open i find cigarette butts in there stomachs so if anything i think they like the smell of cigarettes. I know For a fact that there are many other that can back up my story about cigarette butts in the stomachaches of stalked trout.

perhaps it is time to try another lake?

also from my personal experiences, from talking to others, reading others story's and threw the admission of the SARL lake staff them self's, i have developed a theory.

    the Theory goes

    - SARL is an old gravel pit that was filled up with water under the water it is a baron dirt bowl with an extreme lack of structure and structure is where fish like to be ( structure being drop offs, sunken trees, bushes, submerged points , humps and in some cases trash cans dumpsters submerged fence lines). This part is not theory it is truth. don't get me wrong im not saying there is no structure just say there is very little.

    - With that being said my theory is on the stocking day all the fish hit the water and the bite is on in the general area where the fish were planted then after a day or two the fish that haven't been caught (alot of them get caught) move on to the parts of the lake with structure and stay very near to the structure and don't move far away from it, so if you are not casting directly to where the fish are hold you well sorry to say SHITE OUT OF LUCK and have a good chance of skunking out and on top of that you will get treated to the guys 10 feet away catching one after another.

so my advice is if you have to fish SARL and cant make it to the other fine lake just a little way down the rode. find out exactly where the structure is at and get there early so you can get the perfect spot.

Smoking or no smoking 10 skunks in a row,I agree with the guys you are defently doing something wrong ,I smoke plenty when I fish and and i have never struck out 10 times in a row. and i dont smother my hands in any scent , the most i do is garb some dirt and run it trough my hands but thats if i even remeber.I have seen that happen plenty where people are killing them to the right of you and to the left of you and you cant even get a nibble ,it happens to everybody
