Default Rpt 11-14-10 Seeing Red at Descanzo Bay!

Fishing Sunday 11-14-10 with Tony Jr. on his 21’ Triumph. “Bad Fish” and his Dad “Crazy Hawaiian” Tony Sr. I left Diamond Bar at 4:10 am to meet both Tony’s at Shelter Island in San Diego by 6am. I arrived Shelter Island at 5:52 am, and could not resist taking a picture. It was a picture perfect morning!

Tony arrived shortly after 6am, and we cleared the harbor at 6:25am, reaching our destination of Descanzo Bay at a little before 8am, in perfect grease calm conditions. Wow, the fish were on the chew, primarily the Reds, (Vermillion) rockfish. Tony senior was first to get bit, a nice Red!

Junior also got hammered on his drop.

Not to be left out in the party, I got hammered on the drop, while my second rig was still sinking. As I was fighting my fish, I witnessed a major back lash on my second rig, reached down and wound tight, hook up!

    A double on the Reds!

I was using a four inch Red Flake plastic with a one oz head, and a five inch Red Flake with a two oz head.

In the first hour we caught nine Reds, a couple of Coppers, some Starries, some Johnny Bass, and I caught three Calico Bass, two of which were gut hooked and bled out!

It was very slow after the early morning bite, as it was dead calm, no current, and drop dead gorgeous! We still managed to release before 11am, a half dozen Lingcod, under 24”, a bunch of small Chocolates, a couple of big Calico Bass, such as this one I caught.

I also added to the count a big Sand Bass.

Tony Senior managed to land a few more nice Reds.

Tony Junior decided we needed a count for the day. So here is what we caught so far.

We managed to catch only a few more Coppers, and this Red caught by Junior.

We called it a day at 1:30 pm, with still grease calm conditions, but no current, and virtually no biters. It was a sweet ride uphill ride to Point Loma. Stopped at the Point to clean fish. We all have a bunch of fish tacos for dinner.

Tony Jr. and Sr., always a blast to fish with you, thanks again for the invite, a fun trip for all!
    Hook up!
