FarmerJohn and I went out for the evening bite at Castaic yesterday. We got there a little after 3pm.
We cruised the whole fish arm and started down the ski arm without finding striper tracks (boils). We stopped to work a cove with a few birds in it, then one fish hit the surface in near the beach. John and I cast, John hooked up and worked the fish for a few seconds but it came unbuttoned. We worked the cove for a while but didn't see anything else going on, so we started cruising again.
We cruised the whole lake, we checked out the usual spots but we weren't seeing much sign. Finally after a few stops we stopped in a cove that had a few birds working in it and some shad activity at the edges. I cast to spot where the shad were scattering a little, worked it really easy and hooked up. John said, "Your lure was nearly sitting still.".
Here's our first fish. we had less than an hour left to fish.
It wasn't long and John picked up another. He said, "My lure was sitting still.".
One more in the boat.
So we had identified the days pattern (Not much action on the lure.).
I picked up another one.
Here's a quick picture I took while I hurried to get back out.
There was a small boil right behind us in the cove, I think John got his next fish off of it.
I got another off a spot where the shad were disturbed then one more of a small boil out on the point.
This picture might be the same fish from the picture above.
All too soon we had to head in, into the sunset.
I had to take a this picture for a parting shot.
So at the end off the day John had 2 striper and I had 4. We thought we were going to get skunked but pulled it out at the very end.
Here's a shot of the day's catch on the floor of the boat.
