My nephew and I headed up the mountain to fish the SAR today. We didn’t see any snakes as mentioned in the post by jbcaplette, but we both have been on high alert after my nephew saw a huge diamondback by the Deep Creek dam last week.
Fishing was a little slow but we both managed to C&R a couple small browns each and we also each brought home a stocker rainbow. An elk hair caddis worked for me. My nephew used salmon eggs.
It’s interesting that when we cleaning the fish, I noticed that my fish had an honest to goodness cased caddis larva in its stomach which really surprised me. I’ve never found one of those in a stocked trout before. As my nephew was cleaning his fish, he discovered what he thought was another cased caddis. Upon further inspection we realized that it was actually a cigarette filter that his trout had ingested –brand unknown.
So I guess you fly tiers now know what you need to make up the perfect cased caddis imitation.
