    Black Crappie have 7 to 8 Spiny Dorsal Fin spines (your fish has 7), and White Crappie have less, 5 to 6. White Crappie also usually have some vertical bars on their sides, while the Blacks have more speckled marks. Not too many White Crappies in California. Used to be some in Puddingstone.
