Default Castaic Lake 3/30/10 Striper Day with Pops

It is another week and that means another Castaic Lake fishing trip. My pops and I had the day off. I was going to take him on our weekly / bi weekly saltwater cattle boat fishing, but he asked to go striper fishing instead. It was fine by me. I am kinda tired of pulling up rockfish. We had some pretty good striper fishing. Not as great as last week, but good fishing nonetheless. There are no bad days at Castaic. Here is how the day went:

Got to the lake around 7ish. It was cold. Looks liked it was going to rain. I was at odds which place to start out the morning. Deep inside I wanted to fish the area that produced the fish last week. But according to my Castaic log book, with the weather, temperature, and barometer, I am suppose to fish another area. I resisted the inner urge and went with the log book recommended location.

I was glad I made the technically sound decision. First bendo of the of day was pulling a lot of drag. I had a 20 minute fight ahead of me.

It took awhile to get her up. Here is a picture of Dan (Lowe Boat). When Dan arrived, he chatted with me, drove around metering fish, set anchor and threw his first bait out, I was still fighting the fish. She could pull all the drag she wanted or hug the bottom. I had time on my side.

She was not as big as I thought she would be, but she was a nice fish.

Here is one of the schoolies that kept me entertained throughout the morning.

It was a slow pick, but I was pulling in some fish on a regular basis. My noodley kencor rod going bendo.

The fish were getting better throughout the day. Nothing real big, just bigger than the average schoolie.

It is not a Castaic fishing trip without a Gallions sandwich. I decided to try something different today. I got me a large roast beef sandwich. Does not look as good as my usual italian combo, but it is damn tasty. My friend Ricky gets this sandwich every time. I can definitely taste why. Sooooo good.

With the something in my stomach, I went back to fishing. The old dependable school bus always makes a showing to keep me entertained.

    More fish = more fun

There were some nice ones mixed in.

    Action shot =)

Results of the action shot. A nice barcode one.

Here is my pops with a barcoder. He was definitely cold. He put on everything that was available to keep warm. Thanks for sticking in there pops.

A schoolie with a lip ring.

I did not want to limit out and go home early, so I gave some spots that I wanted to fish the old college try.

Met some forums members out there today, while hoping spot to spot.

One last fish for the day for pops.

The cooler looks almost full. I went down to the lagoon to clean fish. Pops got a big limit of striper fillets, Mom got some whole fish for her lunch get together at work and I had me a Angus steak burger with the fixings from my pops.

    Parting shot.

Thanks for fishing with me. I know these posts are looking repetitive. Your are probably getting sick of them and want to sock me in the face. I really do enjoy fishing the stripers in this giant pond. I had a great time as usual. See you all soon.

Good job out there guys. It was nice meeting you Marzocchi. I ran out of gas around 3:30, went in town, fuled up and was back on the water by 5:00. Went straight to Elizabeth for nothing. Didn't meter anything strong, fished several spots between 35' and 85'. Ended the day with one fish (schoolie) from the ski arm. Tuff day out there it seemed like, for most people. I thought fishing would have been better, considering the storm is moving in. Better luck next time for us. As for you, you don't need any luck, you're on the spot. Congrats!

Nice to meet you too. The linesides totally changed what they were doing last week. For 3 weeks now they did something different each week. So it looks like they are moving quit a bit and not stationary. I think it has something due to the weather. I think next week should be a start to the troll-a-ton.
