Default NPH 1-17 Before and during the storm

Took our 7 year old Aaron down to the harbor for some Spottie training today before the storms this week shut it down.

After a quick stop at Turners to buy some more Camo Jerk Shad and good bye to mom we arrived at NPH at 1100. I sent Jason and Tess a text to let them know we were heading down and they said they would see us there.

The first stop we made was up by 41st St. in a small bay. It was pretty slow there, and the wind was a little up. I hooked up our one and only fish there and Aaron reeled it in.

    Nice one at least.

We spent some time there and Aaron was having trouble casting. We put some new floro on, I wont say the name and it would just not stay on the spool. So we decided we would just share one rod, which equated to me being the "Hooker" and he was the "Finisher.

We headed down to our usual area to meet up with Jason and Tess. We got there with in minutes of each other and started working the area. It was what I will call very slow, a few bites here and there but nothing to write home about. The rain started falling about 2 and we had covered alot of ground before our next fish came.

It seemed that they liked the rain because our next fish was moments later, and a nice on to boot.

Then a few moments later in the spot as the last two another nice one.

Jason and Tess were still working their way down to us, but I think they seen the action and sped up a little.

    Fish On!

Nice one Tess! (Thats 4 from the same spot)

Now the pressure was on Jason (and you could see it on his face). That area shut down and we worked south in the rain for a few misses and break offs! The fish were big today and some were no match for our 6lb line.

We worked our way back up the line towards where we started and Jason finally got the skunk off!

Aaron and I set a goal of 5 spotties so we worked south again (after Steve proving last week to re-work the area's when the conditions change) and Jason and Tess were still fishing along side us (Still raining, harder at times).

Aaron and I got our 5th fish just before 1630.

He was ready to go now, but I was not. After a few casts from all us we all decided to call it quits and head back to our cars. Aaron and I had to drive south on the street so I told him there was one more spot I wanted to try, and the rain was just spitting now. First cast hook up, big fish, drag screaming could not stop it, went under a moored boat and that was that! I was bummed out. Had a few more pick-ups and misses when I finally hooked into a bigger fish that was dragging me around and trying hard to wrap me in anything he could get to. I did not have time to hand the rod off to Aaron so I got to land this one a little after 1700.

    Quality Tournament Kicker!

Same fish, convinced Aaron it would not eat him!

We spent some time there and the rain stopped and so did the fish. We called it a night just before 1800 and drove up the public restroom at 18th st........We since there is a public dock there we gave it a shot and got one more fish.

    Little Sandy

All fish we got were on my new technique and "Berkley Gulp" Camo Jerk Shads.

Good to fish with you again Jason and Tess, guess we will make up all the time we missed in a short time!

omg eddie, i can't believe you stayed till it got dark! lol! awww poor aaron. next time you should bring him a foldable chair and a thermos of hot cocoa. but hey, that was a nice one you got after we left! i still don't know how you do it... with you catching 7 and us only managing 1 each... i guess we still have a lot to learn. it's always a pleasure fishing with the harbor master.

    till next time!

Nice job with the Gulp! in NPH. Also liked the father and son team work. I haven't fished the shore of NPH in years but may need to this week with these storms rolling in which will keep me off the beach.

Dude! I thought Aaron said you guys were going home after a limit of 5. WTG sticking it out in the rain That last spottie is a beast!

So I've been tinkering around with my tackle after you showed me your rig today and I think I've figured out the problem. Hope it works.

I've seen Aaron in action before and he's a natural Spottie Hunter... a chip off the ol' block right Eddie? Great job everybody on getting your NPH fix in before the storm... I told Mike (Bones) that we should have gone to NPH today.

Great work out there everyone. Those are nice grade spotties! I'm starting to regret not making it down to the harbor now, since that was one of my intended stops for the day, but the storm came in a little sooner than i expected.

Aaron looks like he's got the fish dialed in! Thanks for the report...
