Default Nice 16# channel cat at Otay - 12/19

The weekend trip was pretty cool as I went fishng to kick off the beginning of a 3 week break. The bite was pretty similar to how it been the last few trips, tough, but if you happen to come across them you may could have tapped off a few. It seems like lately the cats have not been actively mobile and are sitting in holes. Water temp may have had a lot to do with it as the water temp ranged from 58 to 59 degrees. I tried about 4 spots that I normally get them at but was only able to get love at 2 spots as far as any cat activity was concerned by either a few runs or wide open winter gills. Bite was happening early in the morning and mid day for the cats. Other time periods was nothing, however the gills was wide open at two spots I fished in 32 to 40 feet of water. Pretty much all you wanted again but I only kept 16 of them tossing back quite a few again. Winter time gilling is excellent at Otay and San Vicente all you do is have to locate a few structure areas deep and they will hold to it in schools a lot of times hitting your bait just as it hit bottom. Mealworms or wax worms does not even matter they will tear into it. I just simply like using the red and gold mealworms as they are the right size (medium), and the I can get several of them at which I never use it all for cheap at Rainbow in Compton. Big catfish of the trip was a 16 pound channel. A nice channel to boot. Otay has quite a few dd size channels in there I even got a 22 pound albino last year from there. I released the 16 pound channel.

Nice sized catfish! I liked the way you handled it in the video....like it could of been a pet. ha ha I've never caught one that big I'd be afraid of getting punctured!!
