Default Barracuda Wide Open Sunday at San Onofre

My neighbor and I managed to trick our old ladies into letting us go fishing Sunday morning. We met out front of the houses at 4:45am and headed to the harbor. We got a scoop of Sardines before the mob of boats got there and we were off. We headed straight south to the San O power plant. We fished inside the kelp a little bit but did not get any action. About an hour into fishing we moved close to one of the party boats to take advantage of their chum power and then all hell broke loose.

    :P

It was wide open Barracuda for about three hours. Most of the Cudas were legal size logs that were pulling hard.

We got about 25-30 logs into the boat and lost 50-75 either by the boat or snapped lines.

My neighbor Casey with a nice one.

Captain Matt with a nice log....The mint green iron was super hot today!!

We caught most fish on Fly Lined sardines but when the bait ran out we went to the iron. My buddy Casey used scrambled eggs and white irons but was not getting bit like the mint green. We were fly lining with 10-15 pound mono on Calcuttas and the Cuda's were giving us a lot of action.

I was throwing iron on my Torium 20 spooled with 25 Ande mono. This set up with the mint iron was the call today.

We were the first boat to arrive this morning but we were soon joined by about 500 of our closest friends. There were so many boats out there today but with all of the fish being caught the mood was great. You could hear the stoke all around. There was about 4-5 Dana Wharf boats, 3 Newport Landing boats, and 50 or so private boats.

    Casey with a little BENDO

I pulled in four sand bass off of cut squid near the bottom but with all of the top water action it was hard to stay away from the fun logs.

Excellent day of fishing and all fish were released.....

    :D

Nice report and pics. Dude... I was out there on Friday from around 9 AM till 1 PM and the Barracuda bite was like off the charts.

I know you guys had a lot of fun because I was completely blown away by it. We were doing basically the same thing.... I was fly lining the sardines on 15 lb. mono.

Getting bit on every cast the whole day!

The guys I was with were whacking them on top with the iron too.
So I suppose the Cuda bite is still on there.

How long do you guys think it will last like that?? For us it was total non stop action for four hours straight till we had to leave!!!!

I wouldn't mind getting out for one more day of that action with my son if I could swing it.

Good fishing to you guys, later......... .. geobass

The action was hot for about 3-4 hours. As long as we were relatively close to the party boat action, we were consistently catching fish. The dines were getting bit within 30 seconds of hitting the water every time. The fish were a little shy when we were away from the party boat chum line. They definately were not hitting the iron as well but stayed hot on the dines. If you have chum power and dines the action could of gone on forever. Fun stuff..... 8)

    Nice report!!!
I took the kids to SanO Surfing Beach yesterday afternoon. They went surfing and I took my new (used) kayak and started paddling for the party boats. It was farther than I thought. I trolled a 5" swimbait as I paddled. About 3/4 the way out I hooked a 13" calico, then got two more in a couple minutes.
As soon as I reached the bow of the Helena I got rippped by a nice barracuda. It was on from there. I got about 8 and lost two lures in 45 minutes before I headed back in. Not back for (relatively) short paddle in a littel pc of plastic.
kept 2 calicos and 2 slimes

Nice effort on the paddle out in the Kayak....I am glad that your paddle was well worth it. It sounds like you got some good action. :)
