Just when I thought I was out....they pull me back in!
I wasn't supposed to go on this trip, but at last moment after some peer pressure (from the guys that I went with 3 weeks ago), I reluctantly agreed.
By now ya'll have seen at least 10 of these reports from me in the past year alone, so my report will be commentary about the pics.
Tired in the morning, I screwed up and ended at the ring. No big deal. Got on the cuota 15 minutes later.
Swung by a Mex fishing store on the way down to score some clams for the surf fishing, and to check out lead prices (cheaper!).
Here's where you go for breakfast on the way down. Do it. You won't regret it. They make local cow cheese that is pretty darn good!
Sept 16 was Mex Independence Day. At each town we saw lots of locals getting ready for the parties and riding their horses around. Lots of young ladies dressed in traditional clothing.
Got in before noon. My buddy couldn't wait to fish a little. We ended up catching some random fish (little bass and mojarra).
Koreans love Chinese food. Here's a pic the rest of the gang at one of the local chinese restaurants. Really cheap (85 pesos for a meal that feeds at least 2 people). The food wasn't bad at all!
The point outside the bay. Thresher and WSB spots. We tried for thresher one of the afternoons, but only got tail whacked and one strike and brief hookup. One of the guys ended up with this little guy:
Day one ended with one WSB, and maybe 20 yt (none terribly big) between the 4 of us, along with a bunch of other assorted fish. It was good fishing. Our guide service makes sashimi plates for the fishermen at the end of the day. Good stuff!
Day 2 we worked out way from the 240 breakers to the north side of the island (halibut drifts). Was by far the best day of fishing due to flat seas, and stellar yellowtailing. I caught about 5 YT on a leadhead with dead squid, along with a bunch others on the usual stuff! LOL!
Always fun when you catch a "Personal Best"! Here's my 11lb goat!
Genaro "chiflo" with my goats.
9lber
Dinner that night was Los Jardines de San Quintin. Always a good place to eat and drink.
Day 3 was foggy in the morning. fished the 240, then headed up the line to the 15. Ended the day fishing the point for threshers/wsb and stray yellows.
Here's my 2nd "Personal Best"! We were fishing right at the 240/Breakers right along side the shallow rock. We were down to only big macks in the livewell cause the fishing was excellent for YT. I dorsal pinned a big big mack with a 6/0 (far in the back w/big rubber core). I lobbed it just as we were passing the rock, and within 30 seconds I was getting b-holed in to the rocks. I thought it was a YT again, so I started pumping the rod, and as the fish came up, Genaro was busy gaving 2 other YT. I yelled that my fish was making a run underneath the boat, and before I knew it, Genaro was on the other side and reached down deep and made a gaff at it. I slacked up, and he pulled this massive calico overboard. I was confused wondering where my YT went. Kinda bummed we weren't able to C&R it, but the skip was stoked and wanted it for dinner. Fine by me, and after all, it's his perogative as far as I am concerned. We joked that the "Fog of War" led to the confusion as far as a safe release. Damn fish fought like a yellow! LOL!!
Ranger 85 at the 15. We took advantage of their chum line. LOL!
I can't wait until this boat gets fixed up. I'm going to fish it.
Went in town to party with the captain and get some grub. This place makes a clam and crab stuffing with melted cheese. Holy Cow. Fat man's paradise.
My passenger and I managed to stuff all these with nothing but YT and the sheephead. The other 2 guys in the jeep had a hard time fitting the extra cooler they had to buy for their fish. LOL!
Acambaro's (Ejido Uruapan) again on the way home. Good stuff.
Crab burritos
Brought some of this cheap cane liquor home. Never tried it before.
Adios Mexico for a little while. Not sure when I can make it back out, but I am trying to piece together a camping trip on San Martin Island if possible before the rain shows up.
As for guide services in SQ: if you don't speak any spanish, please give Genaro (Chiflo) a try. He is fully fluent in english, is a "technical" fisherman, and has a nice panga that does 30 knots. You can book him thru his dad (Tiburon) at 011 52 (616) 165 6003. I very much recommend him, and you will learn a lot and catch a lot.
