Default "From Barbed Wire to Barbed Hooks" receives Grant from National Park Service

“From Barbed Wire to Barbed Hooks” – the documentary film project about internees who would brave armed guards and barbed wire to sneak out of the World War II Relocation Camp at Manzanar to go fishing — has been awarded one of the inaugural Japanese American Confinement Sites (JACS) grants by the National Park Service. The JACS.program is dedicated to preserving and interpreting many of the historic locations where more than 110,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II.

“Aside from guaranteeing that we can finish the film this year, this grant is a big vote of confidence from the NPS,” said producer/director Cory Shiozaki. “This is an untold story. By sneaking out through the barbed wire to match wits with the trout in the surrounding waters of the Eastern Sierra, the Manzanar fishermen experienced freedom from a unique perspective. I’m glad that we will be able to preserve the story in a way that it deserves.”

Shiozaki started the project as a collection of oral histories in 2004. Since then, it has grown into a multi-faceted program with the documentary film, an annual lecture and walking tour at the Manzanar National Historic Site (NHS), a traveling multi-media exhibit and more. Over the years, interviews with 21 former internees or their descendants have been videotaped, and vintage photos and fishing tackle have been donated.

The grant award of $49,400 for FY2009-2010 will be devoted exclusively to the post production process and finishing the film.

A recent highlight of the project was a ten-day run at the annual Fred Hall Fishing, Boating and Travel shows in Long Beach and Del Mar in May. “From Barbed Wire to Barbed Hooks” was one of the featured exhibits at what is acknowledged to be the largest fishing expo in the west. More than 300,000 visitors attended this year.

The 4th annual lecture and walking tour is set for the weekend of Sept. 5-6 at the Manzanar NHS. Shiozaki will deliver a one-hour multimedia lecture and will follow with a walking tour of some of the closer fishing sites, allowing attendees to actually walk in the footsteps of the internee fishermen.

Shiozaki has also been invited to help create a permanent exhibit at the Manzanar NHS Interpretive Center.

The entire “From Barbed Wire to Barbed Hooks” project is sponsored by the Manzanar Committee, the non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the memory of the World Warr II incarceration at Manzanar.

To Cory- A well deserved "congratulations" is in order for your efforts. Most people don't know how hard you have worked on this project. If they saw your preparation for the Fred Hall Show, working countless hours with the set design and construction, they would be amazed! But, your work is still ahead of you and I wish you the best. I'm 100% certain that we'll see your final 90 minute documentary on national television soon. And, all of your friends and supporters will be proud that they contributed to your project. Like a famous celebrity once said, "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars".

Congrats Cory...you extreme dedication and hard work has paid off. I can't wait to see the documentary.

After it's all done, maybe you'll start fish again and provide your awesome reports to the Fear No Trout fans.
