I used scotch brite. That stuff is hard to make stick anyways! The paint jobs the factory does are like ionized paint or powdercoat.. some super solid stuff that coats perfectly.

well u cant powder coat plastic so i think its just a thick heavy duty paint. plus i think they dip the parts into the paint and not sprayed.

TJ, if you think you aren't good at it now, I can't wait to see what it looks like when you do think you are good. Thanks for the info on how you prepped it. When I finally get around to painting my reels, I will definitely use your guide. Most guys are very secretive about how they paint their reels, so it's great to see somebody who is open about it.

I can't tell you how many times I've done this to a lure I was working on. lol

    Hey TJ,

What if you just roughed and primed over the original refinish? Is a complete strip necessary? I was thinking of doing the exact same things to a few of my reels. What are your thoughts.

The sol looks Bad *** by the way! Great Job.

You could probably get away with just roughing up the surface and almost using the factory primer. I'll the reels I've opened I've seen they primer it first before they paint. Specially the magnesium reels. They have all kinds of special coatings all over them. My steez looks like a calico inside I'll post some pics in a few.

I warn you though man.. if you try it, you might be out a reel for a long time until you fix it, if you can! lol Just make sure you have a backup you don't mind using or even try it on the backup first. I've been messing with my Sol on and off for at least 6 months or more trying to get it to where I'm happy with everything on it, but when I do it will be killer!

Wait till it comes time to do a spinning reel! =o
