My statement was general in nature. That is was taken to be anything other than that is misread and unfortunate.
We have met before Marley(Woody's Cove incident when dude ran over your spot while hooked on that solid fish) and the friends I have that know you only have positive things to say about you so I assumed there was no malice or ill intent, but I still think it was the wrong place to set up your soap box about letting fires burn when we are talking about Bishop Canyon.

All good dude....see you at the Vine.

    Default True wildfires

The scientific truth is that the ecosystem of the Sierras as well as many other areas evolved to be burned in order to be healthy. Furthermore, the Sierras were far sparser in John Muir's day, as can be culled from his books and old pictures. That being said, I doubt there is anyone else on this board who has any deeper or more abiding love as I do for Parchers. Clearly, some are right there with me and that's good. I believe in saving property whenever possible (Parchers being at the top of that list). But, we protect overgrowth at our collective peril.

    Just the facts...

Im going to throw in my 2 cents here. I also agree that some fires should be allowed to burn. There are a lot of trees, shrubs, grass, that thrive after forest fires. For example, there are some pines that seeds only sprout after the heat of a fire opens the shell. I dont remember the latin name, but you get the idea. Forest fires are generally healthy for the environment.

I do agree that every effort should be made to protect personal property, livelihoods, and human life. But if the fire is in the middle of no where, not near anyones home or not putting humans in danger, then maybe we should let it burn for a bit. Replenish the soil, etc.

I agree with you, but I guess I'm just amazed that the emphasis of this thread seems to be turning towards a "let nature takes it course and let things burn like it is supposed to for the good of the environment" public service announcement (on an outdoors forum, where I'd be willing to bet 90% of most people already know this anyway) rather than focusing on the welfare of our friends in the Sierras and their livelihoods for which this thread was intended. Thanks for weighing in your views Slim.

Alright - so here is the deal.

The fire started yesterday afternoon and spread quickly. They tried to do a mandatory evactuation of the entire canyon around 5:30pm last night - but before most of us could get out, the fire reached 168 near the South Lake turnoff. Most of the remaining folks decided to stick it out since the only way out of the canyon was blocked by fire. This morning, everything looked better but that quickly changed and by 1pm today, the second mandatory evacuation was called and everyone, including those of us who live in the canyon, even the south fork, were told that we had to get out of there immediately. We packed up our computers and some of our valuables and locked the place down. All of the remaining guests, boat customers, staff and workers were evacuated and escorted down the hill in a caravan led by the Inyo County Sheriffs. Nobody, not even myself or my crew is being allowed up the hill.

They have a ton of air support working on the fire but last I heard, they were having a tough time with this one. I heard they're calling in a special fire team with beefed up air support to help out. On my way down the hill you could see the choppers filling buckets at Intake II and dumping on the hill just across the street from the lake. My understanding is that the majority of the fire is in the upper buttermilks and the ridge just to the north of 168. It also looked like the fire had jumped the road and at least some of the fire had burned parts of Big Trees Campground and Bitterbrush.

The fire is mostly burning down the hill towards the buttermilks but its also moving, albeit slowly, towards Aspendell, Sabrina and off towards North Lake. Thankfully there are a lot of fire crews that will do everything they can to prevent the fire from damaging the homes, resorts and structures on the middle fork of Bishop Creek. Last I heard there was no fire moving up the South Fork so at present, Parchers and Bishop Creek Lodge appear to be safe...for now at least.

It's been a VERY scary 24 hours for those of us that live in the canyon - and it's going to continue to be scary as hell until they get it under control. Fire is the worst fear for most of us up here....mother nature can start a fire with one bolt of lightning and then spread that fire unbelievably fast if the wind kicks up. I'm just hoping we don't get a strong north wind come through because that would push the fire up canyon - which could be absolutely devastating for all of us canyon family.

Wish us luck folks.....it looks like we need some right now.
