First Ever Halibut!!! 7/3/09

Went on a private boat w/ 4 guys fr church and my son 7/3/09. Bait were good sized chovies. First stop was the flats, no love 'cept for a little mackerel. Headed out to the oil rigs and started slow. Sandies and little sanddabs coming up. Was getting heckled for bringing the 'big' pole (my trusty gator tail - 20# test line), then I felt a nice deep tug, started pumping my heart out. Had no idea what I hooked to but was determined to land it.

Color came up and I started yelling for the gaff, the thing was about half my height ... tried holding it up for the pic, couldn't lift him up high enough...

The rest of the trip was a blur, the sandies and calicos started biting in earnest after 2pm, 3 sometimes 4 hookups at a time. After divvying up the catch at the end of the day, I brought home 6 sandies, 5 calicos, 1 28" halibut, 1 sml mackerel, 2 sanddabs.

What a good day of fishing. That halibut makes up for a lot since they are such good eating fish.

Hey, Larissa, I knew you'd find this post! We have to get together on a trip girl! Mind you, my boots are not as colorful as yours.... but by the end of the day, they'll have glitter c/o chovy scales... ha!
