Who needs shad at the Russian River when you have so many mini smallmouths!

Went to the Russian River from the 21st-25th and did a bit of smallie fishing about 3 hours each day. Used Chartruese and White grubs, Small arkansas shad colored rattle traps and mini jigs. Mainly produced on the gurbs and cranks.

Fish caught:

2 trout

20+ smallies

2 green sunfish

many squawfish!

All fish were caught between myself, my cousin and my dad.

Overall I had fun never fished river smallies and boy do they fight. I had one chase my grub 5yards while I was reeling in quickly. I even had some baby smallies the size of my lure follow.

No pics of the Squawfishes or Green Sunfish all were caught on grubs though.

If you are fishing below Lake Mendocino those trout are most likely young steelhead. They don't stock the Russian River with trout because they want to keep the gene pool as pure as possible. What area were you fishing on the river?
