Default Rain or Shine the Steelheads will be put in!!!!

Just got off the phone with Tim from Calavares and he assured me that the STEELHEAD will be stocked into the lake before the Presidents Day Tournament. Even if he had to go the round about way he wants the customers of Irvine Lake to enjoy these hard fighting beauties. These fish are truly one of a kind and have been praised for their hard fighting tendencies, pink meat, and brillant colors. Everyone that gets the chance to pull on one of these guys will be severly impressed. So come out this weekend and enjoy some fishing time with the family. Better break out the big gear for these Steelhead guys because they are some mean bugggers!

Thansk for the teaser Jimmy! You know smiling helps selll :) Try it!

I think you or one of the Irvine pros should post up a list of suggested gear for catching these nice fish! I'm sure a lot of people here would appreciate some advice on how to gear UP for these hard fighters!!. I'm just going with 4lb and 6lb rigs, anything else to add?? Gracias!

    Default Steelhead gear

Going back over the years when we have planted steelhead, a few things that stand out are:
They are fairly aggressive biters, so you don't need the 2 pound line.
A long soft rod and good quality 4 or 6 pound line with good drag management can catch them easily.
Even for the monster wild steelhead to over 20 pounds up on the Smith River they only use 8-pound line, just understand that they are going to run a LOT, and you should not try to "stop" them.
Steelhead are also notorious for "surging" just before being netted, causing a breakoff for the angler who isn't ready to let the fish go again.
Nightcrawlers are a good bait choice, as is cured salmon roe. Up in the wild steelhead rivers, there is an entire new set of techniques evolving around the "Pink Gulp! Steelhead Worms".
These are a little large for our fish, but the pink Power Trout Worms should work well.
There is definitely an attraction for pink among steelhead.
Another evolving technique in steelhead territory is the jig and float combination, so another choice might be a pink mini jig and worm trailer under a bobber.
Trollers should be aware that many bites are aggression strikes, so stay with brighter colors like chartreuse, fluorescent pink, and maybe a little chrome mixed in, along with trolling speeds a smidgen faster than normal.
If you hit on a successful new strategy, post here so everybody knows!
