Help! Should I use a 75hp O/B on a 17 foot Striper???????

I need fast advice as the seller is getting ready to run ads to sell the motor, but I think I want it. I have a 1996 Seaswirl Striper that I need 2 repower.


I found a 2000 Mercury 75 4-stroke w/145 hours and IMMACULATE. They are asking 3200.00.


I have 2 questions:
#1 Will a 2000 Merc 75 4-stroke do the trick?
#2 Is 3200.00 too much for this motor, or is it a killer deal???

I think the price is reasonable for a four stroke of that hp... What is the weight of that boat? I'm sure it won't get you moving over 50mph though...

I just wanna be able to get me and 2 others out on the flats, or on any lake.

Weight w/engine is 1770lbs.

Greg that is a *steal* of a price... :thumb:

75 will work OK on your 17ft. it will get you where your going, but you would be happier with 2X more...

But at that price you cant go wrong bud..

I used to have an 18 ft. CC with a 70 hp 4 stroke. It was similar to yours. With me and one or two other people on board I could get up to plane and cruise from 28-32 mph depending on wind and swell. So I think you will be fine. Just my :2cents:

In that case... as others mentioned... I say go for it... That's a good price for a four stroke of that output.

My 50hp Honda is more than enough for my 15ft CC and if you don't care too much for speed... that 75 should be good! Oh yeah... if you don't have trim tabs yet... you should look into smart tabs. You'll be able to get on plane faster and it provides exceptional handling at slower speeds as well.

Greg, what is the max hp your boat is rated for ? And what year was the boat made ? Approx how much does that 75hp that you are looking to buy weigh ?

Actually sounds like a great deal. That's pretty low hours.

Try this site, it's been a god send for me. It has forums for every type of boat mfg and engine mfg. The down side is you can kill a whole day browsing it (like here). Btw, what happened to your existing motor?
