Marina Del Rey 5/27 Report (PICS)
Havnt been fishing for a while because at the end of last summer our boat was having engine troubles. So we tore it down to find that our crappy 3.7L 4 cylincer mercuiser had a cracked head. As the 3.7L is known for being a POS we decided not to through good money after bad and ordered a brand new 4.3L V6 Mercruiser crate motor, complete from carb to exhaust. We did all the work our selfes, the install was actually pretty easy, had to fab a couple of front motor mounts and trim a little fiber glass but otherwise it was an easy swap. We also put in a new wireing harness and redid a bunch of other wiring. So hopefully now we have a older boat with new boat reliability.
Anyway on to the fishin Report, We launched out of Marina Del Rey on Sunday about 7am. We Stopped by In-Seine and got some nice deans. The guys at the bait dock said there wasnt much of anything biting in the bay right now but there was a couple of small threshers caught to the north so we decided that we would give that a shot.
We headed north and fished about 2 miles North of the SM Pier. Put out a chum bucket in 80ft if water set up the rods and waited. We had our shark rigs out as well as a couple on the bottom for some halibut. The only action we had was one Sand Bass for the first couple of hours but we continued to drift. When we got to 40ft of water one of the shark rods goes off, My bother Dan grabs the rod, sets the hook and the fight is on. This fish was pulling hard making run after run on the 60lb setup. We thought some how we lucked into a larger model thresher but after a 15-20 minute fight we get it to leader and see that its not a shark but a BSB. We guestimate it being in the 70-80lb range. After we snap a couple of pics and get the hook out he bolted for the bottom for a succesful release. We Did not attempt to take it out of the water or lift it up for pics so i think he will be just fine. The pics below do not do it justice, this thing was huge, Its head was as big as the 4gallon chum bucket that you see in one of the pics.
After that we decided to head south to see if we could find some halibut. We stopped just past the tanker buoys and set up to drift in 60ft of water. On the first drop i got a shortie, and not to longer after my brother gets bit and brings up a raked bait. So there appeared to be some halibut it the area but the wind was picking up and we were having trouble keeping our baits on the bottom so we decided to call it a day.
Not what i would call the best day of fishing fishing but it was exiting to get the BSB and the boat ran get so it was a succesful day. We will probalby head to Catalina or head south to the coronados next weekend, hope to have a better report then
