There aren't many spots you can legally ride in the Sierras because most of it is national forest monitored by the BLM. There are some spots just north of Mammoth just before you get to June lake that's got a huge area for riding. As far as getting to the "backwoods" you have no shot on a dirt bike. Big money if you get caught trying. North of Bishop, off highway 6 is another popular spot, and you can pretty much ride anywhere around the lower owens north or south of Bishop.

Just north of Mammoth is on your left is Glass Creek, right across the the 395 is the Caltrans sheds. Green/red sticker and a sparky and your good to go. Go to the ranger station in Mammoth (on your right as you enter town) and ask them where you can ride. They will give you they heads up on everything. I've ridden from behind the ranger station to June across to Mono lake and back. Did Mammoth motocross many of times and used to ride around the trails after. Lots of good riding back there it's just tough to enjoy the view when riding. Go to www.RV.net and the toyhauler forum search for glass creek and you will get a ton of info. Good luck and have fun.
