Dont wait till bug season, which starts Sept 29th this year. Go out now and get some crabs!!!!!The current rule(as of May 23,2007) is that bug season starts at 12 am on the Saturday before the first Wednesday in October. That means that you can not put a bug in your boat before Saturday sept. 29 at 12 am. You can trap for crabs right now or at 11 pm Friday sept. 28. You can not put a bug in a reciever,i.e. a game bag or bug holding pen until 12 am. You can pull crabs from your trap and leave any bugs which happen to crawl into your conical net until 12 am. At 12 am you can put those bugs in your RECIEVER or boat. I usually wait til 12 am to launch, the first wave of bug hunters will be pulling their traps and heading in. I hate the crowd and usually hoop from 2am to sunrise on opening night. I caught 1 bug today hooping for crabs during the morning incoming tide. I had to throw back a nice 2 lb bug. It does show that they are out during the daytime though.

Re8elmonk0341 the limit for rock and spider crabs is 35 per person. Dungenous crabs have a lower limit, but you wont find those crabs south of Moro bay. Unlike lobsters, crabs have really soft meat that you have to boil awhile to firm it up. I usually boil just the claws for 25 minutes. Figure 8 claws per person and a hammer. I like the taste of the crab meat straight instead of with butter. Enjoy!!!!
