Default june lake, virginia lake, streams 5/18- 5/21

First off I would like to thank all you guys who aided in making this a great trip with your tips and suggestions. Thanks a lot!!

load up everybody and start the drive to the sierras. Nice to see the landscape and weather change the closer we got. We got to our cabin at June lake front cabins about lunch time got settled went to Ernies tackle shop and had lunch at the Tiger bar. At lunch my buddy dared me to eat a night crawler and my bro in law said I will eat the whole dozen of them if you give the new pole you just bought at Ernies to me. After lunch he eats the dozen as promised and hands me the new pole and says happy birthday! The bait shop gave him a T shirt and the Tiger bar gave him a beer. So he still made out. Finished off the day getting everything together had drinks and playing cards.

Wake up walk right around the corner about 50 yards and sit down in our rental boat from the marina. Really convienient! The shore line seemed to be the ticket we used a variety of lures and bait to find out what they wanted turned out bait and wait was the ticket. Salmon peach power bait and inflated night crawlers on a small hook with 1# test leader had best results. They would chase lures and jigs but just were not hitting them. Of course me and my bro in law had the slow day with only a coule of small fish but I did catch my first alpers  My 2 buddies on the other boat came in with nice fish including a 4 1/2 pounder and a 3 1/2 pounder. This 4 1/2 pounder has the lead in the Lake front cabins contest for a free 2 night stay. We are hoping it holds up so we can go back!

We were planning on float tubing Crowley for perch but the threat of high winds and limited reports we decide to give June another try thinking we had the lake figured out a bit, wrong. between the four of us 4 fish before lunch. It was even slower fishing than the day before. So off to lunch and a change of plans. Decided to try out Virginia lake then it happened I was in to some small but great amount of beautiful fish that wanted everything I threw at them. Standing in snow fishing off the bank we did great releasing a lot of fish including my first brown. :D We had a blast but it was getting late and time for dinner so we packed up and headed back to the cabin.

We slept in a little and loaded to truck up said good bye to the cabin owners who are just great and couldnt be more cool people. A quick stop at the hatchery puts fish on our mind so we start asking around. Drive into bishop and head up the hill to a spot a local said we should check out found a small stream coming out of I believe lake Sabrina south lake or something like that. I am pretty sure it was called south lake creek?? Ok anyways we fished this beautiful spot for a few hours and caught a few small fish with a couple more browns included on natural power worms and salmon eggs. Fighting little fish but still slow fishing and a long drive a head so we were on the road to home talking about next years trip.

Thanks again guys for you help and suggestions enjoy the pictures, Jakalope

    Default Great Report!

    Great report jakalope!

I always take my kids up to Viginia Lakes becuase you know it not fishing there - it's catching!

By the way - that photo looks more like a Brook Trout. Did the top of the fish look like worms? If so, then you got yourself a brookie - which is cool because they tend to inhabit lakes at higher elevations (like Virginia).

    Congrats on a great trip!

Orange and white tipped fins = Brookie. Browns are good fighters but brookies are the best looking fish.

    Default Oooooo!

Wow - that one looks like it came out of a high country lake...

I remember fish like that when fishing in the back country. Heck - even rainbows look different.

    Thanks for the pic!

Great report. I will be staying at Lake Front cabins at the end of July. Hoping to have fun and catch some fish too?

Taking the kids and hope they can catch fish too.

How much did a rental boat cost for June Lake? Was it worth it?

    Thanks

    Pete
