Crowley Lake and Manzanar w/photos

[Fear No Trout]

Just returned from a 4 day trip from the Eastern Sierra.

1st stop was Manzanar where I checked in to see what was happening with the archelogical dig at Block 9. I was so amazed to hear that this garden and fish pond were not even visible until they started to dig.

Below while I was visiting the dig site at Block 9 I ran into an actual internee named Henry Nishi who lived in Block 14. Henry is also one of few internees who used to sneak out to go trout fish while he was there.




If you had read previous posts about my exhibit at Manzanar I have to give thanks to gentleman below, Ranger Mark Hacthman. He is one the two rangers that assited me in making my exhibit possible by spending over 12 hours of his time to set the exhibit up at Manzanar.

To show my appreciation I gave him a personal Fear No Trout guided trip at Crowley Lake. He had never been to Crowley and was totally amazed to the size and quality of fish that Crowley Lake has, not to mention the perch. Mark got his limit and several nice trout, one rainbow that measure 21" and a 22" cutthroat...Congratulations Mark!









Also during this time, I was able to assist a past client to a Fear No Trout "Perch Search"

Below we see Glenn Yamada and John Nakagawa both long time friends and fellow fishermen. Glenn, gave up a $2,000.00 fly fishing trip in Montana and opted to go on a trip to perch fish with FNT.


As you can see, he was not disappointed. We ended up catching 140 of those yummy little morsels. Glenn also prepared one thee best "tempura" style perch dinners I ever had. I also prepare my famous "Perch Tacos" as seen in previous posts.






Below we happened to run into six ladies in McGee Bay that I had guided in 2004. They were having a little difficulty so I put them on some nice trout in the 2-3 lbs range.

This entire week was a great start to the beginning of what I hope to be a great trout season.

Wow....nice report FNT. I can't believe how clean they got the pond at Manzanar!! When I was there there were these huge boulders that were in the center and we all had a hard time getting them out. It looks incredible compared to when I was digging there.

I like your pictures of Mark fishing. He has a great sense of humor and tells the funniest stories. They all caught tons of fish. What I caught was nothing compared to all that. Now I definitely would love to try a tour at Crowley. haha Looks like you all had a great time fishing and wish I could've tagged along.

I didn't know Mark helped with your work either. They all talked about you quite a bit when I was there...haha. It was very nice to hear stories!

Thanks so much for the referal about the dig. I loved being there and the staff was incredible. I made so many friends there. I have to admit Richard was quite amusing to me indeed. His bike and personality in general are just hilarious! I liked taking him fishing...lol.

Anyways, once again great report. Yes....I definitely think you will be meeting me sometime soon. I am in the process of finalizing a possible and almost certain position through SCA (student conservation assocation) to place me at Manzanar. Ralph Bell has called and asked me when I can start so I will be doing a 6 month paid internship at Manzanar and living in Independance for free! I will be working with the youth and doing all this random outdoor stuff. It will be a blast and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it all works out. If it does I leave in 4 weeks right after school ends and I will be there for 6 months. Heaven!! TONS of fishing for me and lots of outdoor fun.

Nice post again. Wish we could have hooked up while I was in the area. Looks like everything is going great with Manzanar. How long did it take you guys to fillet those perch? Fish Tacos! We'll have to hook up and hit the water.

I have never caught one of those Perch. Are they similar to Crappies?

Indeed! If you like crappie, you will certainly enjoy eating the Sacramento Perch.

I had a guy offer me $500.00 to take him on a "Perch" guided trip but I can't this season because of my uncertain schedule with my film project.

Definitely the best tasting fish in the Eastern Sierra...and there is no limit on them....made some perch tacos again tonight...mmmmmmmmm!!!!

Wow! What a trip! I can't wait to get back up and check out the dig site and fishing exibit. I have caught a few of those perch by chance fishing Nightcrawlers. I never knew they were such good eating. Great pictures and report. thanks alot! good fishin!

Sounds like a great week of fishing and another terrific post from FNT! Those Manzanar pics are cool and the fish are even better. Using a tempura batter is the best way to cook them perch fillets for fish tacos.
