I'd like to chime-in that in addition to the safety factor and get-a-ticket factor, driving fast eats gas. It probably varies with the type of car, engine etc. but if I remember correctly, your fuel efficiency drops when you go higher than, say 60mph. Please feel free to correct me.

    Cheers,

due to my flexible work schedule and undying desire to avoid crowds while fishing, I typically only make that drive midweek and in the middle of the night.... usually pull into bishop just in time to get a mcgriddle and make first call at rusty's lol. But because of when I drive I only see another car maybe once every half hour or so. in this circumstance, i would definitely support the arguement that 80mph is definitely a more than safe cruising speed (i'd say the chp agree too since i have never seen them out during these hours). i would say though that one of the most satisfying feelings is watching some douchebag fly past you at 90-100 and seeing him pulled over a few miles up. middle finger out the window to those aholes every time, lol. but yeah, in general, lets take out time, put on some good tunes or have some good conversation with friends, and enjoy the most beautiful drive in the country.

The reason you don't see and CHP during the very early morning hours is because there are only 2 units on the road which also includes the roads going to death valley. My last 2 trips I never saw one CHP all the way from my home to Rock Creek, and that was driving b/t 0500/1030.
Driving on holiday weekends they put alot more units out but overall there is actually very few units on the roads in the Eastern Sierras.

To answer a previous question I am not retired CHP, but am retired after 30 years with one of the largest agencies in the country.

PS. have you ever seen a car after it hits a deer/ cow going 80 MPH. I hit a deer in 96 south of Bridgeport going 40 MPH and it did a thousand dollars damage to my Blazer.

As a side note, on a trip to Bishop in March there was some road const. S/O Lonepine with Flagmen and traffic being escorted. I was the 5th car behind the Cal trans escort with about 25-30 cars behind me. This idiot in a SUV Porsche decided he didn't want to wait and passed the entire line of cars at speeds well over 100. It made my day to see him handcuffed by Inyo Sheriff 5 miles down the road.

I don't want to argue but I know the Calif. Vehicle Code like the back of my hand.
I am not argueing the Vehicle code. I am saying that 80 MPH in some sections of 395 is Safe and Prudent. Someone else made the same point. Alot of times, I am driving not peak hours and I dont see many cars in either direction
WE can all agree, that we need to be safe.

I agree with Joshua that there are some stretches of 395 that is "arguably" safe to travel at 80mph, but is not prudent to do so. Driving at night doing over 80 mph is even more dangerous because the night creatures come out at night to play and you have less chance (actually no chance) to brake in time. I learned it the hard way last year when a little cottontail hare hopped in front of my 80 mph dumb_ss and blew out my fog lights (luckily my wife's car and not mine  ). Had it been a deer, I don't think my car or even perhaps me would have made it. But let's face it, if you get a speeding ticket for going 1 mph over or 25 mph, a ticket is a ticket cause YOU BROKE THE LAW. A posted speed limit and a maximum speed limit are different. I believe the speed limit on 395 are maximum speed limits so even 1 mph over is fair game to CHP (but rarely given out).

    Drive carefully.

There are plenty of strectches on 395 that are posted 70MPH. After living in Europe for 4 years and learning how to drive safely at 100+MPH, Some 4 lane divided on 395 one can safely drive 80MPH. Road conditions, traffic density, experience, etc. Speed usually doesn't kill but driving too fast for conditions does.

Kindly tell me the locations where you have seen 70 MPH speed limit signs on 395 in San Berdo, Kern, Inyo and Mono counties. As I said earlier I drive that road at least 25 times a year and have never seen one. I still insist that 395 does not qualify as a highway desiginated for those speeds.
