Opener=ownage

Saturday-openning day- woke up at exactly 440am and got set and i was off to crowley, got there at around 530, parked by hilton bay, put on my waders, and walked over to a nice point. Found only 2 other people fishing but it got crowded pretty soon but fishing was the best I've seen it. (3rd time here) Made my first cast at 6 and it was on!

3rd cast produced this brown (est. 14") on a red/gold Lip ripper spoon. Released this one.

Saw another fish fish estimated 5 lbs chase it on the next cast

Set another rod out with a whole 'crawler (inflated along with garlic oil)=

this one weighed 3 lbs even. kept it

and another. kept it


Then it kinda died on lures and 'crawlers and switched to Rainbow PB

then almost instantly BAM another one. kept it

Caught another that was around 2 1/2 lbs but it had lumps on the side so i played it safe and threw it back


then i caught this one that looked alot different, someone told me it was a kamloops rainbow but im not sure. Any ideas?

The bite immediately turned off at 10 am so i called it a day


Sunday- Slept in. Then headed off to the south fork bishop creek, drove up to South lake to see how the ice was, to find that it was completely frozen over but it looked really cool so i had to get a pic....


Fished the South Fork with salmon eggs and ended up with 2 browns and 7 rainbows. All in all it was a good opener and I can't wait until i get back up there.

Nice lookin fish you pulled from Crowley!

South Lake is still lookin icy but conditions are improving every day the sun shines on the ice. Here is a pic from 2 days ago while we were breaking up ice on the lake....there is now a lot of open water in boiler cove and the shoreline near the boat ramp is open about 8 ft out....we're going to try and bust up more ice tomorrow, I'll post pics if I can.

How sure r u? i talked to a few people there and they assured me it wasnt and that it was just a kamloops or something..... but 2 pounds a baby?

Kamloops is nothing more than a strain of rainbow and don't look much different from your typical rainbow trout although their behavior is what sets them aparts. Given the pic and report, I would assume that the fish you caught was one of the 'bows and nothing different or special...not to say that a 2lb fish trout caught in the sierra isn't special. Although I would agree with my friend P-stick 99 out of 100 times, I can say with certainty that it wasn't a cutt. The cutts they have in Crowley are Lohontan Cutts and they are known for very distinct, and often very few, roundish spots. The spots on a cutt tend to be concentrated more numerous around the tail and typically appear below the lateral line above the tail.

Below are pics of two kamloops....notice the severe difference in colorations. This goes to show that appearance between rainbows can vary considerably.





Here is are some pics of lahontan cutts....one youth, one adult female and one adult male. Notice the spotting is relatively consistant (shape & size, although location and frequency does vary)
