The Lake has been low due to a concern for flooding in the Valley. The Powers-to-Be are trying to spread the water over the valley floor to replenish the aquifer and to minimize flooding when the run-off really gets going. Remember, too, we are a reservoir - we always start low in the spring as SCE uses water during the winter to produce electricity thru their hydro-plants and there is only snow falling. As we warm up, the run-off begins and the Lake starts to fill. We are usually at capacity at the beginning of July and stay at capacity during August. Once the run-off winds down, the Lake level starts to lower - and the water cycle of the Lake begins again. Hope this gives some insight on why there is so little water in the Lake. 😀
Fishing this week remains good. Bait fishing is the best – NightCrawlers and PowerBait. Fishing the Inlets with NightCrawlers, PowerBait and Jigs. Remember, there are 3 inlets normally (we have a few additional creeks feeding the Lake now), DingleBerry Inlet at the back right-hand side, Little George Inlet at the back left-hand side and the George Inlet about 200 yards from the back on the left-hand side. Try them all if one of the Inlets has people fishing. Trolling KastMasters or a Red & Gold Thomas Buoyant or just a plain old NightCrawler (don’t forget the swivel). Shore fishing with PowerBait or NightCrawlers. Drifting a NightCrawler around the rockpiles or thru the channels. If you have questions about your set-up, please come in and ask!
Carolyn Middleton and her husband made the trek from Fredericksburg, Virginia, to fish the Lake and what excitement they had – Carolyn landed a 3 pound beaut using NightCrawlers. Addison Gomez (9 years old) caught a nice 2-1/4 pounder also using NightCrawlers.
When traveling down in the bottom of the Lakebed, it’s best to take a look over the hump. Had a Cadillac Suv went over the hump between the little island and the trail, got down the hill ok, but when he tried to come back up, slid in the sand and hooked up on the a rock. Mr. K Towing to the rescue!
All the birds are putting on quite a show. Sure is breathtaking watching them soar over the Lake.
We did get a few sprinkles on Wednesday. Temps dropped by about 10 degrees, but rebounded over the weekend to make for an awesome time. Looks like we have breezes in the forecast for the week and weekend. Temps appear to be in the low-70s for the highs then drop to the lower-60’s for the weekend and in the low-40s for the lows – those drop to the low- 30s for the weekend.. Sabrina Camp and Four Jeffrey are scheduled to open – pending a drinking water test – Wednesday, June 7th.
The trail into Sabrina Basin remains sketchy – lots of snow in the upper elevations. It is not recommended to take small children on this trail until the George Creek calms down. The road to South Lake is open to the Lake and we hear the Lake is still iced-over. We hear the upper parking lot still has about 4’ of snow. Not sure about the lower lot – hear it might be plowed just not sure. The road to North Lake is “just downright scary” (according to the reports we’re hearing) in some place – just be darn careful if you head in that direction.
If you catch a big fish or a limit just to have your picture taken for the webpage and then try and give your fish away – we won’t post your picture, but then again we may post it as ‘WASTER OF A PERFECTLY GOOD FISH TO EAT’! Crimp down your barbs, take a picture on the boat and release it for another day.
If you’re hiking stay safe out there. Remember to leave a note about your destination and approximate return time and a clothing description. And you might want to hike with a buddy!
When using the bug juice, try not to get it on your hands – you’ll transfer it to your bait and the fish just don’t like bug juice or sunscreen or lotion or cologne or perfume. Wash your hands in the stream or Lake to get it off, and then use some fish attractant on your hands.
Important stuff that just stays in the report for a bit:
ALWAYS BRING A JACKET TO THE LAKE!
Watch out for Deer – especially during dawn and dusk.
Make sure you wear some kind of sun protection – the sun and reflection off the water will do a number on your skin and eyeballs!
Might be a while before the hikers can get in – the Sabrina Basin TrailHead is still under about 2 feet of snow. There is also a good drift on the trail across from the Café where an avalanche came down in the winter – looks like about a 10’ drift.
