The arrest of Nurse Alex Wubbels

I'm sure most of us have scene the video of Nurse Wubbels being arrested. She was the nurse in Salt Lake city for refusing to draw blood from an unconscious patient. The evidence clearly shows she was following the law in not allowing the police officers to draw blood from an unconscious person. (so she was in the right for not doing it) That's not where I'm going with this!!!

I'm going to following in the footsteps of my Hero Abraham Lincoln the "attorney" who can argue both sides of the equation. I'm going to argue the point that the Nurse Alex Wubbels invoked "White's Right" in resisting arrest!!! Say what etucker what are you talking about???? (you must be thinking) I'm saying the Nurse Alex Wubbels did the wrong thing in resisting arrest. Yes she was being illegally arrested but she was fighting and screaming in the hands of a Police officer, which is the wrong thing to do!!! Just suppose there was no body cameras on or a bunch of witness around her when she was being arrested. Add in she was a person of color or worse yet a young male. (Can you see where I'm going with this???) She under those parameters was lucky she wasn't put in a choke hold or cracked across the head to quieter her down as she was being arrested!!!

With all the protest in sports now being done by the Black athletes for the unfair treatment by the police and others. Nurse Wubbels is setting a bad example of what to do when being arrested even though she was in the right. Every person should be taught to never fight it out in the streets with the police. (even though you may be totally in the right) You do that in court with an attorney representing you and a fair judge and a jury of your peers!!! If you are in the right, the vast majority of the time you will be vindicated!!!

If you do what Nurse Wubbels did, (resisting arrest) you could end up being injured or worse "DEAD" even though you are in the right!!!! Everyone should know or teach people around us to "Never fight it out in the streets with the police!" (you will have your day in court) I wonder if all the Black athletes that are protesting now know that 1 simple rule??????

Well said. I've never understood why people, all raises, think they can fight a cop when he's not only trained, he has tools to keep you from winning. I haven't seen one incident where a cop just walked up to a car or a person on the street and just shot them or kicked their asses. They're human and are probably going to push back when pushed.

That's what the Black Athletes are protesting. Their brother's are resisting wrongful imprisonment and are shot dead!!!! If everyone didn't realize, this thread was to cover 2 different topics at the same time.

That's the problem. They don't know the simple rule. This lady was at work doing her job. 2 completely different scenarios vs getting pulled over on the street. I can't imagine doing my job and getting arrested. If a cop tells me to put my hands up then my hands go up. No question. That's the problem. No respect for the law.

You know CHUCKY is it, "a no respect for the Law thing" or is it Human emotions taking over and people aren't thinking straight. Have you seen the video of Nurse Wubbels getting arrested??? She clearly does 3 things wrong after being told she is under arrest. 1. She try's to pull away from the officer, like a defiant child pulls away from a parent who is going to discipline them. 2. She is physical struggling with the officer as she is being escorted to the police car. 3. She is screaming at the top of her lungs, "I've done nothing wrong!" which only makes the officer more nervous. I don't think those 3 actions came about because she doesn't have any respect for the Law. (I imagine she is a very lawful person) She just lost control of her emotions at the time and that could have caused her bodily injury or worse!!! Like it has happened to so many other people who don't go peacefully when being arrested!!!!

I don't think she should have resisted arrest, but I can't blame her for doing so. By the way, she is a former Olympic athlete. I wonder if the officer would have arrested her had he known that. The arresting officer clearly misinterpreted the law and overstepped his authority.

Respect has to be earned and my guess is that 1) you're not black 2) never have you been black or lived in a black cultural environment 3) you're the typical "oh just shut up and do what they say and you'll be fine" group. How can they "respect" the same cops that are abusing and killing them? What are they supposed to do? "Oh, are you a good or bad cop?" After their entire lives of witnessing and seeing the abuse on their people, at some point you just get fed up and fight back. It pains me to see white people try to justify the bad cops behaviors when they have ZERO idea what it's really all about. It only proves that white privilege is alive and well. I did grow up in a black community and witnessed first hand the abuse and I myself was beaten by cops for hanging out with my black friends and called a N***** lover by the cops that were kicking my ***. So unless you grew up in it. Keep your uninformed opinions to yourself, all you're doing is reassuring everyone that white privilege/ignorance is alive and well. As for the nurse. She has every right to resist wrongful arrest if she so chooses. She was only doing her job and the cop was trying to make her break the law. I would like to think in my heart the "Rule of Law" applies to everyone regardless of color!!!! I don't disagree with you if a white cop murder's a Black man he will probably get away with it. That's why I advocate the don't resist policy in being arrested. Don't give them any excuse to shoot you!!!!

My father was white and a medical doctor, but he was harassed by police once. Why? Because he was on call at night and had to go to the hospital to work. Apparently he was tired and not driving very well.

However, the harassment is far worse if you are a black, Hispanic or middle eastern person, especially for young men. And it has gotten worse in recent years as the police have become more militarized. The number of police killings has been skyrocketing.

I was agreeing with you that the nurse should not have resisted arrest, by the way. I am not a physical fighter, so in that situation, I would have probably just given the officer a tongue lashing, but not resisted arrest. But in a situation like that, the person being arrested is probably in shock, and does whatever the first thing that comes to mind is.

That's part of the Big problem for both sides when being arrested. The person is in shock (being arrested) and does whatever the first thing comes to mind and the police officer react's in a physical way. I love the description of what a "Good Soldier" is when under enemy fire. He can act some what normal when he is totally terrified!!! The Military figured out a solution for that a long time ago. (sort of) They drill ever soldier over and over again until it just becomes natural to do your job even under duress. That in my opinion is, "What everyone should be taught" and then reminded over and over again, if ever being arrested! 'Don't Resist being arrested!!!' Especially in High crime area's or you risk a physical or worse police response. It doesn't help in my opinion when other's think they are privileged enough that they have the right to resist!!!

Yes, quite so, Eric, but somebody such as Nurse Wubbels has almost certainly never had any training in what to do when arrested. I have had to train myself in some social settings how to remain calm, as when I am teaching, and it works so I know that it can be done. I had two female students actually get into a fist fight at the end of class a few years ago, and I just stayed calm and broke them apart, then had one student notify administration. One of the combatants was a military member, by the way. After that, I noticed that the students thought extra highly of me. LOL

In a perfect world, cops would be trained to know what they can or can't do. We don't live in a perfect world.

Now, if it were me in that situation?

1. I'd let the cop arrest me.

2. I'd sue the pants off of them.

(And as a parenthetical, if the cop did pull blood illegally, the evidence would be inadmissible. Why would he insist in pulling the patient's blood?)

Which brings me to my last point.

This make me wonder about how many times evidence is illegally gained by LE, but then reports are 'altered' so that the evidence becomes admissible.

I didn't know that the patient died, Chucky. That shows that he was in really bad condition and thus not in condition to have any extra blood drawn from him.

This wasn't a routine traffic stop. This was a police officer attempting to engage in battery of a patient, and trying to compel a nurse to assist him. Had she complied, she'd also be guilty of battery. And as far as I am concerned, both would have been guilty of conspiracy.

I do not advocate resisting arrest in every circumstance, or getting into a physical confrontation with ever law enforcement officer you have an encounter with. But if ever the situation called for it, this is it.
