I bought some hoops about 3 weeks ago. I always wondered if it would be worth while to hoop off the rocks.
There is a spot in OC that has a vertical drop off from the rocks down to hard bottom about 10-15 feet deep so I decided to take one net down and give it a shot Sunday night since the swell was minimal and the wind had died.
I made the first drop at sunset and let it soak for 1/2 hour then pulled. HEY!!! I had a legal bug stuck to the outside of the net!! He held on to the netting and I bagged him. Second pull was empty. Third pull was stuck on the bottom and I thought "lost net". I pulled hard (note to self, bring gloves next time) but it wouldnt budge. I gave a bit of slack then jerked hard again and it broke free but felt really heavy.
I thought it was going to be kelp but it was a 25 lb bat ray!!! His wings were flapping out each side of the 36" net. I kicked his *** back in the drink and then made a couple more pulled for nothing. I wrapped it up after that since two drivers showed up.

I just might try it again.

I take the fifth.

I will say that you could probably hoop from Dana jetty or any jetty but I suggest scouting throughly in the day light on a calm day with good water clarify to find a spot with as near to straight up and down drop and flat or hard bottom so as not to end up snagged on the bottom or snagged when you pull on the rock wall.

And make sure that there is no swell when you go or it could be hazardous to your health.

Hey Lobsterboy,

Yes you can hoop from the rocks and get quite a few nice bugs.....if you hoop during the warmer parts of the season. As the the weather starts to cool down and the winter "storm" surge starts to hit the beaches the bugs will migrate or retreat to the deeper water. somehwere between 80' to 100' depth. If they don't they can get tossed around in the strong winter currents and become easy pickins.

Best of luck hoopin!!!!!
