Took my nephew out Tuesday from Huntington Harbor (HH) for some quality time. The water was amazingly flat. Air temp was around mid 60’s, water was 59.5, and the marine layer barely burned off all day.
All fish were CPR’d today. (Caught, Photo’d, & Realeased for all the new folks)
We went to L.B. for bait, but all they had were huge race horse sardines. No go…Chris got a real kick outta the sea lions here tho. I know how much we all hate sea lions when the screw up the fishing, but it still sucks to see any animal go through this kind of trauma. These two pups were ensnared in drift nets. The nets are cutting into their flesh quite deeply and we watched as this one struggled just to get up on the dock. Though the use of drift nets are illegal within state territory (3 miles of land) they are still used extensively outside that area. There are literally hundreds of miles of these indiscriminate killers off our coast.

I called a rescue org. to see if they could help them out. They were going to be out there Sat to check on these two and some others reported off San Pedro.
We also fished here since the meter told me so. We caught a few ravenous macks and a few croakers. We also picked up a fan here. This lil guy was looking 4 a handout. Though I didn't give anything to him (so as not to imprint the association of food with fishermen)he was very adept ad catching the fish we released. He eventually downed this croaker.

Second stop was Esther right outside the HH entrance. The fishing was instant and great. I was on first with a small checkerboard, then Chris hooks a bull cali. At first I thought he was snagged cuz he was major bend-O’d and was PULLING the boat closer to the rig!
He lands the largest calico I have seen in a while. We were stoked. Then I het NAILED, and I am MAJOR bendo’d, and he’s PULLING The boat closer to the rig! I couldn’t believe the strength of these fish!

I was PRAYING to at least SEE this fish. I was trying to fight him and back away at the same time LOL! It was pandemonium for a few! LOL!
We netted this guy and snapped a few photos, and he/she was off.

I tied on my Gulp! jerkshad and bested this barelycuda.

We also caught a few smaller calis, and a sandy.

A few minutes later, the fuzz rolls up on us and asks us how far we are supposed to b off the rig. I say 300’, and he asks how far I am. I say 45. He says, “Git outta here.” Then he says to wait, and asks me for my info. No ticket this time, but he said next time for sure. It was worth it tho!

We both were lucky to be looking in the same direction when we saw a undersize hali jump free of the water and do a backflip. He was in 2-3 feet of water and right next to the bank.
Chris fishing the bow.

We had a great day and a great time. The seas stayed calm all day. Good times.
