Red Drum

I called up my good buddy Mitch “fishrdi”, to see if he’d like to join me for a fishing trip up to Castaic Lake to fish for Striped Bass and Largemouth, aboard my 15ft aluminum Duroboat “Red Drum”, but Mitch convinced me to fish the salt instead of the fresh. It turned out to be the right call.
The major prime solunar time was from 6:15am and 8:15am, plus we’d be fishing the sun-up bite, so I had good feel that the critters would be on the chew. We made it to our first spot around the 6:30am and we were reward with a double hook-up…..sweeeet!! The Sandies and Calicos were on a major chew.
Here Mitch with a nice Sand Bass.

Around 8:30am the bite slowed down, so we started critter fishing.
Here is Mitch a nice Rubberlip Perch.

Then we get into some Triggerfish.

Then Mitch catches another one and another one!

Here I am with another hard pulling Trigger.

Here I am with another Calico Bass that ate a 6 inch Basstrix swim bait on 2 ounce Vinnie Silver jig-head.

We ending catching 40+ Bass, 20+ Triggerfish, 12 Sheephead, a bunch of Sculpin and Brown Rockfish, plus an assortment of Perch and Mackerel. Not a bad day of critter fishing in the Santa Monica Bay. All the fish were released to fight another day.
I’m sure glad Mitch talked me out of going up to the lake.
The weather was awesome and the catching was just as good. We started the day with a double hook-up and we ended the day with a double hook-up. You can't ask for anything better than that. I can’t wait to go again.
Till next tide,
