What type of fish is this?

Can anyone hep me identify what type of Southern California fish this is? Caught in the ocean near artificial reef but the bottom was sandy. I believe its a perch but not sure. They were both around 8 or 9 inches long. Thanks!

Looks like a blacksmith perch. But why are you keeping species that you can't identify?
