Permit and Boat Rentals are sold via a fully automated machine located at the Ranger Station. We do not sell fishing licenses, bait, or tackle, so anglers must acquire these essentials elsewhere prior to their visit. All day motor boats are discounted to $20 for seniors (60+) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and for active military every Saturday.
Due to the threat of Quagga mussels, there is a ban on private water craft and equipment. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Trout season is off to a good start with limits coming out of the East Buoys and in Boat Dock Cove. Brian Ortega has the lead in the Whopper Contest with his 7.90# trout caught opening day on a kastmaster at the buoy line. Other notable catches included Johnny Campa’s 7.10#, Alex Chao’s 6.70#, and Rafael Villegas’s 4.80# trout. Some of the more successful baits have been jigs or kastmasters, as well as, yellow-ish powerbait or inflated nightcrawlers.
Catfish are being caught throughout the lake. Lake Wohlford cats prefer cut mackerel or chicken liver.
Bass can be found around structure. They respond well to swimbaits, crawdads, and dark colored plastics.
Crappie prefer the cover of shade and are most often caught using finger jigs or live golden shiners.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
