Permit and Boat Rentals are sold at the Ranger Station. At present, we do not sell fishing licenses, bait, or tackle, so anglers must acquire these essential items elsewhere prior to their visit. All day motor boats are discounted to $20 for active military every Saturday.
Due to the threat of Quagga mussels, there is a ban on private water craft and equipment. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Currently we are closed weekdays. The park will re-open for weekday fishing and general recreation in mid-December following the first trout plant, as always, we remain open on the weekends.
Catfish are being caught throughout the lake. Mike Hernandez of Valley Center caught & released a 9.6# catfish while fishing for bass with a crank bait off Senior Shoreline. Lake Wohlford cats relish cut mackerel or chicken liver. Drop by the ranger station for a dough-bait recipe that works for both catfish and carp.
Bass can be found lingering around structure. Bass respond well to shad raps, frogs, and dark colored plastics.
Crappie are being caught in Boat Dock Cove and by boaters trolling for them. Wendell Jackson of Escondido caught ten crappie last weekend in Boat Dock Cove using shiners, the largest of his fish weighing 1.80#s. Crappie prefer the cover of shade and are most often caught using finger jigs or live golden shiners. They bite best in the predawn hours.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
