Permit and Boat Rentals are sold at the Ranger Station. At present, we do not sell fishing licenses, bait, or tackle, so anglers must acquire these essential items elsewhere prior to their visit. All day motor boats are discounted to $20 for seniors on Tuesday and Thursdays and for active military every Saturday.
Due to the threat of Quagga mussels, there is a ban on private water craft and equipment. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Catfish are being caught throughout the lake. Tuesdays plant should make for some great catfishing on Independence Day and during the warm weekend that follows it. Lake Wohlford cats prefer cut mackerel or chicken liver. Stop by the ranger station to pick up a dough-bait recipe that works well for both catfish and carp.
The big bass are biting once again with two double digit largemouth weighed in just over the last twenty four hours. Randy Eddo of Escondido caught and released a 10.10# bass, Thursday afternoon, he caught trolling with a small Rapala lure. His hold on the monthly leaderboard was short lived, however, as Xavier Schwarm of Escondido caught and released a 10.50# bucket-mouth, Friday morning, on a 6” jerk-bait fishing from a boat near the reeds on Senior Shoreline The bass respond well to shad raps, frogs, and dark colored plastics.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
