Will be on the lake when it opens on Sunday. Have not seen many recent posts on the LMB fishing? Looking forward to seeing the new areas of the lake underwater! Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you.

I went on the 19th and didn't have any luck on the bass. I caught my 1st redear sunfish to beat the skunk. Guessing it was around 1lb and kind of small compared to the others I saw. Once I figured out they were literally spawning as I was watching I left them alone to do their thing. I did take a short video of them in 7ft of water. Water was pretty clear in that area with 8-9ft of visibility.

Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times is the best advice I can give you. With the high water level and the heat it'll probably be crowded on Sunday.

kenmitch,
Thank you for the info. Have my fingers crossed. With Diamond closed it will be a zoo!

Thanks kenmitch for leaving the spawning Redears alone with their spawning. So many people throw out and even drag their anchors and chains through the spawning beds ruining them for any future fish. I've seen them do it on spawning bass beds too. No one needs to anchor in these shallow areas. Tie up to a tree or drift or use a trolling motor. Sometimes you get more fish by drifting anyway.

Went on the 29th caught a couple largies nothing big nor 30+ bass like Pete Marino always claims.

3 of us on the boat. Buoys everywhere by the dam and with the water up near full pool, many areas in the Sail Cove area now off limits to boats. Fished the dam to start the day working north to south. We had about 15 fish for the morning there with the largest about 2 1/2 lbs. and one nice red ear all caught on drop shot. Not much luck along the east shore below the intake. Headed down to the east end and picked up a few more alone the way to the backside of the island. Big fish was about 3lbs. and we ended up with a little over 20 fish for the day. Left at 2pm. Wasn't as crazy as I thought it would be. Concerned about the narrow area around the island that now has boats traveling at 60+mph and kids off the towable devices in the water. Looks like an accident waiting to happen.

BillyBass,

Thanks for your report. I haven't been to Perris in quit a while. Last time was when they started filling it back up and before they allowed the 35 mph around the island, (no one just goes 35 mph). As you indicated it is just a matter of time before someone is killed by an idiot traveling 50 - 60 mph around the island. I haven't seen a lake patrol at Perris in over a year. If Perris was owned by a private company, the lawsuits would put them out of business the first time someone was killed!

I agree. We go most weekends, and last week was the first time I've seen the police on the water this year. There were far more police pulling people over inside the park. By the way Billy Bass, I'd say you did well. Last time out a couple of weeks ago, we scratched for 3.

I'll second what MillsapBoyz wrote. Had Pete take me out a couple of years ago after years of fishing Perris and doing ok. He upped my game considerably. If your fishing needs a tune-up (every 100,000 bass of so) Pete is the way to go!

C'mon guy. It's not Pete's fault you can't catch fish. Pete has as much experience if not more than anyone on that lake. You can't expect to catch fish like a tour pro that guides this lake for a living. Good grief.

Hahah I catch fish Bro! Just not 30 plus at every lake like he says. Also, when other pros aren’t coming close to those numbers and yes I get it perris bites are “specific” but when other pros are only catching limits and he’s claiming 30+ fish with a 28 lb bag I call bullshit! He’s a good stick jus saying a little over exaggeration on the numbers for the money 💰. Stay humble.

I kayak fish and don't carry an anchor with me so I just drift and peddle around. Once in a while I'll tie off to a tree or bush.

I'm not really into bed fishing as I feel it's detrimental to the fish population. Touchy subject with anglers so I'll leave it alone.

I liked the lake better around 7-8ft or so ago. Seems like the current water level is best for the idiots that pretty much destroy the lake and pollute it with trash. Sad to see the decade of brush growth slowly decay and rot away under the current water level.

I'm not a hater....It's one of those you wouldn't believe it unless you've seen it things for other anglers in the end. I'm sure you catch your share and probably some of my share of fish in the end.

Maybe it's just your reporting when you have those really good days? I didn't search out your posts to see as it doesn't bother me. Do you post when the times are tough and you guys only catch a few fish or possibly get skunked?

The advantages of boat fishing is always shown in the photos.

I kayak so I don't really have too many options on my photos. My 1 handed photos are for the most part what I get. I did finally buy one of those Hawg trough things but have yet to test it out.

This was one of my birthday bass I caught on March 21st. I think she may be related to Dotty? 5.12lb this go around. Has a distinctive birth mark so if I catch her again I'll probably know it.

Fnguyen... I have never said I catch 30 bass and 28 lbs every time out ..You are delusional.. I have had some truly epic days this season during the prespawn, spawn and post spawn... I NEVER EXAGERATE ON MY NUMBERS... Your lack of skills and results make you envious and apprehensive to believe that But that's on YOU not me.. We were smashing them on CRANKBAITS and the dropshot.. and when it was good we blew by thew 30 fish mark often... Sorry if you were out there floundering around while others were catch bass during the best time of year..
Guys that come out with me know how hard I work to get on the bite and adjust accordingly... I never "Mail it in" and stop grinding to have the best day possible... And most days it works out.... Sure there are tough days or tougher days..... DUH!!!

I won the Angler of the year title this season and out of 5 tournies we finished 1st, 1st, 2nd, 2nd and 8th..... And the only reason we got 8th is because we zigged when we should have zagged that day... our timing was off and hit spots at the wrong times... And that whether you know it or not makes a difference... We decided to start somewhere and shouldn't have fished that spot first.. In the mean time other teams started where we should have started and smashed them and we never recovered...ITS FISHING..
The season isn't 30 bass everyday of the year... Things change, patterns change and fish move... That's why its called fishing..
In each of the tourneys we finished 1st or 2nd in we had OVER 30 keepers fish each time.. And I carried that into my guide trips.. Me and my team partner put more time on the water than any team out there during the season.. I fish 4 days a week and my partner also fishes 4 days a week AT LEAST.. Then we put our heads together and compare notes and game plan... And our results speak for themselves... And for the record... any of the top teams that fish out there ALSO catch over 30 bass each time out.... That's the goal.. sorry if your game doesn't get those results... And you have the nerve to say "Prove It" I WILL prove it....Show up for round one of the series in November and enter the tourney... And either I or another of the top teams will gladly take your cash... because you have no clue of the effort, homework, hours, dedication, commitment and time we put in to catching bass..

I don't have the time, nor desire, on Independence day to argue and try to convince some "I cant catch them, so he must be lying, hater" on how good I do at the lake throughout the year.. Ive already given more of my time than you deserve.. Its the 4th of July... go fishing.... get off your computer and go put in some time on the lake...
Id never take you on a guide trip because you are extremely unreasonable ... Id rather win your money from you in a tourney... But you wont show up because Clearly you have no clue nor the game..

Happy 4th of July...

There is a legal term when a 3rd party not involved in a case but has an interest in a case get's involved. (I'm invoking that now) Pete in my opinion and many others is the best fishermen on this board. He is also a straight shooter, who doesn't get involved in petty arguments. (I should know, I'm one of the worst culprits for that) So for anyone to questions this man's credibility is insane!!!

I am also (my turn) the biggest attacker and ex-plainer of people making inappropriate responses to writer of fish reports. This is a classic example of what not to do!!! So when people wonder why their isn't more fish reports on here. This is a classic example of why!!!

As I stated earlier, my sons and I fished with Pete a couple of years ago, and we did quite well in 25+ mph winds. It was the windiest day I have ever experienced at Perris. We were still able to catch fish. I had just started bass fishing, and the trip with him definitely changed my game. My son on I caught 17 bass in six hours on Easter Sunday, and all but 3 were over 5 lbs. We would have easily had 30+ if we didn't have to leave. Do I do well every time out, absolutely not. I see Pete out there often and he is usually smashing them. I for one appreciate his posts, and hope he continues. If you don't like his posts, feel free to ignore them.

You really shouldn't have to worry about calling people out on fish reports (that's my job!) lol All kidding aside, you've only made 77 post in 3-4 years. I've made close to 4,000 and I am (not to brag) the number 1 writer of fish reports on this website! So if someone get's out of line (I am there) and Pete did nothing wrong! Plus I am the number 1 defender of this website to the false allegations made on here.

Fishing is fishing and sometimes they bite and sometimes they don't! I went fishing yesterday at Lake Henshaw and the only thing I caught was a Hat!! (I snagged one on the bottom) So if someone uses Pete's services that person is not guaranteed a bunch of fish! (if you book a bass guide for that reason you are a fool!) You should book a Bass guide to learn something about Bass fishing you didn't know. Or to learn something about the lake you didn't already know without an experts advice.

If you looking to book a guided trip and be pretty assured to come back with a whole lot of fish. Book T/O's guide service!!! I never thought I would be plugging that guy. But I seen the results too many times (the famous glory picture of the fish in the bow of the boat) to know you will catch a lot of fish almost every time with him!

For what its worth, gang, its good to see a little bit of life on the lake perris board. Between that and DVL the silence has been deafening. I know DVL is closed because of the algae, but even before that it was quiet "as a church mouse". Id include a few more cliques here, but you get the picture

The bite is decent right now but will be getting better as this heat wave pushes through. Once the water has a little bit more flavor in it the bite will improve.. I knew the bite would get tougher if the water got crystal clear.. and that's where we are at..
A little more color to the water and the bite will get sick again. The lack of grass also has an affect on the bite.. The shad are staying deeper and the bass are feeding on the tiny fry.

Screw the haters Pete. The people that know you don't care what they say. My buddy and I went out in the harshest winter conditions with Pete on purpose to learn how to get deep water winter fish to go and he did put us on fish. We only got about 6 or so, but he never lied about it to anyone. He was very upfront from the beginning and I learned a lot that day that I still use (other than ice jigging) I still cant figure that out...lol

Thanks for the info Pete and maybe we'll see you out there soon.

Getting bites in the Winter can be tough and under bad conditions...it can be brutal... We grinded though and that what needs to happen during those days... Its not always easy...

guess what? Here comes winter... in just a few months haha

Brent/Pete,

You guys had any luck out of Perris lately? I did really good in May the few times I went. June was slow for me on quality. Last summer this time I was catching a lot of deep fish, but I am not marking anything deep as of right before the 4th. Maybe they are stacked up there now?? With all the extra water I just cant resist hitting the cover in the east end and neglecting anything west of the island. I know Pete mentioned the shad are deep. Are the bass on them??????

Heres the deal as of right now... Because of all the new water there are tons of bushes and trees all the way out to 25-27 ft deep... the bass are suspending in the trees.. They aren't on the deep offshore ledges like they used to be...(Im sure some are but not in big numbers) I used to love ledge fishing at Perris.. but because the water has come up it has forced us to have to adapt or get left behind and call people that have adapted, liars haha..
The crank bite continues to be a great way to catch bigger fish right now... DEEP CRANKS like 20+ footers... Youll throw it for a long time, almost lose confidence then boom, boom, boom, you find the right tree that has a school and youll catch a few.. Then back to nothing for a while... A key for me has been marking those spots with a waypoint and going back to them later and the spots replenish and you can get bit again in the same spot.. Keep in mind that if you catch a bass you HAVE To MAKE ANOTHER BUNCH OF CASTS ON THAT SPOT BECAUSE that spot may have a huge school of bass on it... You just never know so you have to mark it and come back.. even if you don't catch a second fish at that moment there..
Also what Im doing is starting with a deep crank and after I catch one or a couple and then they slow down Ill switch to the dropshot with a short leader... Because if they stop chasing the crank or don't chase it at all then they will be feeding down eating slow moving things like crawdads or sculpin... So im going from one extreme (the fast moving crankbait) to the other (The Dropshot -A slow moving bait that is close to the bottom) Ive been pretty surprised how many times this summer that I saw them on the graph and couldn't get them to eat the crank only to switch to the dropshot and catch them.
As June progressed and as things tightened up, I started having several other different rods on the deck and fished what seemed right.... Good Ol'Junk fishing.

But overall, It hasn't been an easy Summer so far but there have been fish to be caught, its just taken a variety of techniques to put together a good bag... Junk fishing has been the name of the game and I hate junk fishing... I like to be extremely dialed in... BUT keep in mind that June is usually a tough month at Perris....This year the tougher bite has extended into July BUT.. Things are starting to happen though so the lake is only a couple weeks behind schedule of its normal summer..
Things are starting to pop... shad are headed shallow, the topwater bite is starting in the typical areas it starts in.. and the water is getting some color in it... Things are coming along... And right now you can catch them on the Dropshot, the Texas rig, the Carolina rig, the fly line rig, a squarebill, a deep crank, an Alabama rig, a tailspin, a popper, a walking topwater, a frog at a variety of depths from 3ft all the way out to 45ft.. ....

Nice to hear from ya Pete! Now if only the weather would chill out I'd take a crack at the lake again. Fishing from a kayak in the heat really sucks as it consumes too much energy moving around the lake. I tend to not drink or consume very little liquids once on the water so I don't have to take a leak. It works out good on cooler days, but not so good on the hot ones. I really enjoy kayak fishing but a dang boat would come in handy at times.
